Jamaican nationality edit

Rather than engage in an edit war, let's discuss the issue here. To play on a national team according to international rules, one has to be a citizen of a state. If one is not a national of a state, one cannot play on the national team. Makes sense, no? So what proof are you requiring? Can you PROVE Michael Jordan is a citizen of the United States, as you are claiming you need proof Hibbert is a citizen of Jamaica?--TM 20:59, 4 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

You need a reliable source to prove that Hibbert is a Jamaican citizen, or that his nationality is Jamaican. Period. It's a WP:BLP and any controversial information must be verified by reliable sources. The subject himself is complaining publicly about his Wikipedia article and the nationality listed there, so it is officially controversial. Stop edit-warring until it's verified. See WP:BLP:

All quotations and any material challenged or likely to be challenged must be attributed to a reliable, published source using an inline citation. Contentious material about living persons that is unsourced or poorly sourced—whether the material is negative, positive, neutral, or just questionable—should be removed immediately and without waiting for discussion.

It is not controversial to say that someone who represents a country internationally is a citizen of that country. It is the rules of international basketball. Moreover, how do you argue against Jamaica's Hibbert working hard to reach the top? Jamaica's Hibbert seems like a convincing source to me. It is ludicrous for us to change Wikipedia for every request by the person profiled. What if a politician complained about mentioning a scandal? He basically doesn't understand what we do here, but that is not our problem.--TM 23:07, 4 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

If Reliable Sources and consensus that those sources state that Hibbert is "Jamaican American" a "Jamaican citizen" and that his "nationality is Jamaican", then those things can be added. It appears that his father was born in Jamaica, before moving to the U. S. Does that therefore make him of Jamaican nationality, without a reference stating such? I don't think so. It also seems that his mother is from Trinidad, which is an island that is part of the nation of Trinidad and Tobago. Apparently the nationality is "Trindidadian, Tobagonian", which using the logic being applied here would make him a Jamaican-Trinidadian-Tobagonian-American. But in the categories he is an "African American basketball player", so we would have to make him Jamaican-Trinidadian-Tobagonian-African-American in that case. Since he was born and raised in America as an American citizen, then maybe it would be most accurate to say that he is an "American". Though that longer version does have a certain ring to it! Saying "The rules of basketball say that players must be citizens. Hibbert is a player. Therefore Hibbert is a citizen." is not allowed, because it is WP:SYNTH. You need to find a source which says he is a Jamaican citizen; you may not deduce this yourself. Ken Arromdee (talk) 20:37, 7 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
