I have just repaired the page from vandalism, but still doubt the accuracy of some of the claims, especially those of the cake decorator. It needs a thorough checking over. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Joshwedlake (talkcontribs) 02:09, 28 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

This article needs a lot of work. Anyone willing to take it on? I've rewritten the first few paragraphs, but after that it starts getting into unreferenced information (like the incorrect heating mat wiring which was 'never revealed in the public inquiry' - but the article never states where it was revealed) and the language starts going downhill. 86.10.97.74 22:37, 7 May 2006 (UTC) Oops, that was me... Work on systematic demolition started in July 1986. Every single joint in the building was recorded. As the first panels were removed it was quickly discovered that the load bearing joints far from being full of concrete were in fact full of rubbish - cement bags, newspapers, cigarette ends, bottle tops and floor sweepings. This extended throughout the building and it was possible to date when the joint had been made from the date on the newspapers. After the partial collapse of the SE corner Ronan Point was rebuilt and reoccupied in 1971. What gave a great deal of cause for concern in 1986 was that the joints on the rebuilt corner also had joints stuffed with newspapers.

September 11 conspiracy theories

edit

9/11 Conspiracy... here?!

The collapse of the World Trade Centre towers has been attributed to fire damage to its steel structure, caused by burning jet fuel. However, there is substantial evidence pointing to controlled demolition of WTC 1,2 and tellingly, WTC7, which had no jet fuel or jet crash into it.

I took the liberty of replacing that with a link to Collapse_of_the_World_Trade_Center - Maikmerten 13:06, 11 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Ronan Point is used as one of two examples of the pancake style structural collapse of buildings similar to the world trade centre. The similarity, or difference, between the structure of Ronan point and the world trade centre may thus be of interest to readers. As far as I know the World Trade centre, like the empire state building, was a steel contrusction, not LPS. I take the liberty of using the World Trade Centre as an exmple of a steel building, rather than the empire state. I think that it is a better example since it is an other building that, for one reason or another, collapsed. --218.223.193.144 (talk) 05:59, 31 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Relative importance of the article.

edit

I'm old enough to remember the shock at the partial collapse of the building -& realization that this building & perhaps many others was demonstrably unsafe. It changed public perception of these buildings & building regulations. An extra sentence or so in the lede is needed. JRPG (talk) 16:17, 7 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hugh Griffiths

edit

I wonder if the "Hugh Griffiths, Q.C.", named as head of the government inquiry into the disaster, is the same as the Hugh Griffiths, made QC in 1964, later created Life Peer as Baron Griffiths? If he is, the name could be article linked.Cloptonson (talk) 21:07, 17 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Looks like they are, ..do you want to do the deed?
Hugh Griffiths QC, recorder of Cambridge, is the chairman of the three-man tribunal invesigating the partial collapse of the “factory built” 22-storey tower block, which killed five people on 16 May.
William Hugh Griffiths, Baron Griffiths ..He held the office of Recorder of Cambridge between 1964 and 1970 http://www.thepeerage.com/p15226.htm

Building name.

@Kerry Douglas Ronan: Hi Kerry. I saw your edit. This article has a sentence "Ivy Hodge lived on the 18th floor Ronan Point, a 22-storey tower, named after Harry Louis Ronan, a chairman of the London borough of Newham's Housing Committee, which had opened on 11 March 1968" which is where the name comes from. I note that Harry is a shortened version of Henry but Henry Edward Leonard Ronan and Harry Louis Ronan are more likely to be two different people.
Another link has the sentence "Ivy Hodge lived on the 18th floor Ronan Point, a 22-storey tower, named after Harry Louis Ronan, a chairman of the London borough of Newham's Housing Committee" and I can't find any other reference to Henry Edward Leonard Ronan. Do you know how this confusion occurred? My concern is that even if I leave things as they are someone else will check the references and change it back. If you can provide another reference -or if you can scan a suitable document/photo to show proof, it can be uploaded to show the old source was wrong. Hi,
Thanks for your message. The link to the article about my father is apparently from the BBC who have got his name wrong. I was notified of this by my son this morning who inturn was asked by a friend if he knew who the mystery person was. As the article never mentioned that he was deputy mayor at the time, I added that too. Kerry Douglas Ronan (talk) 21:17, 8 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Kerry Douglas Ronan: Hi Kerry. I appreciate your comment on the BBC article and want to help you verify the change. Wikipedia has a list of mayors of Newham but this doesn't extend to senior figures like yourself and I can't find any other reference. I will ask for advice from someone with far more contacts and experience. Regards JRPG (talk) 13:51, 10 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
Since most sources refer to him as simply Harry Ronan, and middle names, initials etc., are not commonly emphasised in UK names, why not just ignore the issue? — O Fortuna semper crescis, aut decrescis 15:44, 10 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
Pinging @Kerry Douglas Ronan and JRPG: per above. — O Fortuna semper crescis, aut decrescis 15:56, 10 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi and Kerry Douglas Ronan: Thanks for that, it's acceptable to me and I did consider it. Perhaps plan B is to insert it as a temporary measure and insert a corrective note to the original if we get an authoritative source. P.S. I've borrowed your paid editing box! Where was Ronan Point exactly as far as I know the street it was on (clever street? , canning town) doesn't seem to exist anymore and also is there a plaque or so. I think I live quite close to it and could go to the spot to make some photo's but where was it? WillemienH (talk) 12:49, 18 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

This article gives some details, including confirming the address mentioned above. It also has some pictures of how the area looks now. Sadly there's no plaque at the time the piece was written. This is Paul (talk) 13:04, 18 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
Sadly also showing how London council was keen to commemorate its officials by naming tings after them, but less keen on commemorating things after they've gone totally Pete Tong. — O Fortuna semper crescis, aut decrescis 13:37, 18 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
