editWho is to say that Bell didn't do what Private Eye alleged? Jeffrey Archer committed perjury at his 1987 libel trial, and John Major sued Scallywag magazine for saying he had been having an affair with Claire Latimer. In fact, it was Edwina Currie he had an affair with! They named the wrong person! This occurred when the press and public were more deferential about politicians.... or at least when scandals didn't come out in the open as much as now...— Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.102.31.178 (talk) 10:06, 4 February 2010
He died at about 2.00 pm, after chairing a meeting in Methodist Central Hall where Enoch Powell had been speaking and was hurrying to catch a train at Marylebone Station where he had arranged to meet a member of his family. He would not have been late. There was no liaison with a mistress, had she existed. Private Eye had no sources at all.....just conjecture because an MP had been in Westminster on a Saturday! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.174.191.83 (talk) 00:11, 4 June 2011 (UTC)
- The tale that he died whilst having sex with his mistress resurfaced in the papers again today. I express no view on whether or not it is true, other than that it seems a little unlikely that a newspaper would print pure conjecture. Contrary to popular myth, most of what newspapers print usually has at least some basis in fact.Paulturtle (talk) 01:26, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
Should the alleged death circumstances be added to the death paragraph? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Stuartcottis (talk • contribs) 17:04, 2 December 2022 (UTC)
Beaconsfield 1972
editAre we absolutely sure that Bell was already candidate for the new seat and Hezza somehow tried to launch a challenge to try to oust him? That would be very unusual. More likely they were both putting in for a new seat (with Bell being the favourite as it covered much of the same ground as his previous seat). Hezza skirts over the incident in a single phrase on his memoirs.Paulturtle (talk) 12:47, 20 September 2015 (UTC)
Race Relations Acts
editI added a reference to the Race Relations Act 1968 as the quotes are from the 1968 debate. I am not sure how to add a reference to the 1965 debate but I found it here where Bell's contribution to the debate were really interesting such as giving an example of Hungarian immigrants taking over. What prescience!
The 1965 Handsard is here. Can anybody add it in a footnote? [1]https://hansard.parliament.uk/Commons/1965-05-03/debates/28e9ee04-70cb-4d4c-b514-c681106cd10f/RaceRelationsBill Stuartcottis (talk) 17:12, 2 December 2022 (UTC)
