Talk:Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Braga

Untitled

edit

Two mistakes: 1- Portugal did not separate from Spain. When Portugal was formed (12th century), there existed the Kingdom of Castille and Leon. Spain was only formed on the 15th century.

2- The archbishop of Toledo bears he title "Primate of Spain" whereas the archbishop of Braga uses "Primate of Spains" or "Primate of all Spains". —Preceding unsigned comment added by 163.1.180.84 (talk) 01:30, 11 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

History section

edit

The history section is:

  1. a cut-and-paste job from the Catholic Encyclopedia (POV, uncritically Catholic)
  2. virtually a duplicate of the separate article Ecclesiastical history of Braga
  3. out of date: ends in the nineteenth century, the end point of the Catholic Encyclopedia article (pub. 1907), with virtually nothing of the 17th, 18th, or 19th century (the reason is that the CE's source, Rodrigo da Cunha, published in 1635).
  4. unreferenced, except for a note at the end of the second sentence of paragraph one, which is to the Catholic Encyclopedia article.

The author of the Catholic Encyclopedia article, by the way, was Tirso López Bardón.

The entire section needs a rewrite, with some effort to get beyond the Catholic Encyclopedia.

Stars, in list of Bishops of Braga

edit

Most of the names in the list of Bishops of Braga have stars after them. But there is no indication of what the stars mean, or how the star distinguishes the starred bishops from the others. Either add a satisfactory explanation that justifies all the stars, or delete them, IMHO.

Removed flag of Portuguese Republic from Infobox, per WP:ICON.

edit

I removed the Portuguese Republic flag icon from the Infobox, in accordance with several sections of WP:ICON; specifically (quoting),

  • "Generally, flag icons should not be used in infoboxes, even when there is a "country", "nationality" or equivalent field: they are unnecessarily distracting and give undue prominence to one field among many."
  • "Flags make simple, blunt statements about nationality, while words can express the facts with more complexity."
  • "Do not rewrite history. Flags should not be used to misrepresent the nationality of a historical figure, event, object, etc. Political boundaries change, often over the span of a biographical article subject's lifetime [which includes details about individual bishops]. Where ambiguity or confusion could result, it is better not to use a flag at all, and where one is genuinely needed, use the historically accurate flag."
