If you want to sum up Hide in a few words, then he's an Act politician and Act party leader. Any show he appeared in once may be worth a sentence somewhere well down in the article, but it isn't one of the major things he'll be remembered for. If you could cite a source, that would be great, but it still shouldn't go at the top of the article.-gadfium 07:49, 2 December 2005 (UTC)

This is a biography of Hide. It's a place to explain his political viewpoint, but not really a place to debate it. Critical views of Hide are welcome, but they must be cites from print sources or a reputable web site (not a blog).-gadfium 19:33, 14 June 2006 (UTC)

Maori Representation

Saying "Rodney opposes Maori representation" is a loaded statement. The same goes for if one said "Rodney is opposed to Maori getting more representation than other NZ citizens". The only way to give a wikipedia article entry is from a neutral standpoint. "Rodney opposes the allocation of reserved Maori seats" is the description of the actual act, not the ideas behind it, so is the only suitable description in this case. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Lagwagon555 (talk • contribs) 05:51, 1 September 2009 (UTC)

In response to 'Maori representation means specific allocated reserved Maori seats. Let's not use verbosity to say so', this is certainly not clear. 'Maori representation', interpreted literally, means that Maori are represented on the council. If it meant the allocation of reserved seats, then non Maori, by your definition, would not be represented on the council. The article needs to be written for a global audience. New Zealanders may know what "Māori representation" means, but I am not sure if people from other countries will. Being a little more verbose to remove any confusion is a good thing.-gadfium 08:37, 1 September 2009 (UTC)

Climate change

I have found several references to Rodney Hide being a climate-change skeptic, which I feel is interesting and controversial aspect to Rodney.

Act leader Rodney Hide said climate change and global warming was a hoax. “The data and the hypothesis do not hold together. Al Gore is a phoney and a fraud on this issue and the emissions trading scheme is a worldwide scam and a swindle"

The NBR report of his comments in Parliament is a suitable source. I have recently reverted attempts to post material on this by a user who provided incorrrect references, and then included quotations that did not appear in the reference, but the only problem I can see in the most recent additions is that the material too closely paraphrases the NBR article. There is surely a median ground where we quote what he said accurately without infringing on the NBR's copyright.-gadfium 19:35, 22 February 2011 (UTC)

I'm also concerned about the use of selective quotation here, as presenting a single day's inflammatory comments as a statement of his general position is not usually appropriate. The user involved is also distorting the quotation; the "foundation of lies" claim is not found in the source, whether as a direct or indirect quote or as a reporter's characterization, and some contextual material appears to have been dropped. If this is an important part of his politics, there ought to be usable secondary sources, far more appropriate than a single cherry-picked quote.
