I don't know where DoctorWorm7 gets off doing this, but I wrote this article completely out of my own memory of the comic which I have in my own collection.

And no, I can't prove it because the text was written on the fly and there is no way I can prove a negative. Rather, DoctorWorm7 has to prove that I plaigerized, which is impossible. Furthermore, after examining the text, I assert it plaigerized from this article.

First appearance confusion

Did RR first appear in Hulk vol. 2 #271, or in Marvel Preview #7 (Summer 1976)? This effects the creators: are they Bill Mantlo, Sal Buscema, and Al Milgrom or Terry Austin, Bill Mantlo, and Keith Giffen. The page got updated here. Just from my memory of being a comics fan at the time, his first appearance was indeed the Incredible Hulk. I don't have the Marvel Preview issue, but the only references on the web to Rocket Raccoon even being in that issue are wikipedia references. Looks like wrong information to me. link this shows a picture of "Rocket Raccoon" in "Earth:Sword in the Star" (in the Plagueosaur section). It is issue #7 of Marvel Preview (Summer 1976). This is an enigma. Antmusic 17:34, 8 October 2007 (UTC)

The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe says that it is Rocket in Marvel Preview #7 here, but since he is unnamed in the issue, I will agree that he may be alleged, especially since it is 10,000 plus years in the future. Unless Rocket time travels a lot.... Does he time travel? Anyone?? Maybe it is one of Rocket's relatives (apart by a few 1000 generations). It is also possible that Bill Mantlo liked the design and idea behind his previous heroic 1976 raccoon and created a brand new raccoon character. If the Handbook says it's Rocket, then it's Rocket. He's shown no time travel abilities in any of his other appearances, but the Handbook entry makes it pretty clear that he has travelled in time. Kelvingreen (talk) 22:29, 5 March 2008 (UTC)

Excuse me, but while I admit to not having seen these comics in many years, my memory is quite clear that the Rocket Raccoon miniseries also picked up the Sword in the Star's long-dangling plotlines. If so, then "alleged" must go out the window. Can anyone verify or refute? BTW, "Earth" is in no way, shape, or form part of the Preview feature's title, and in any event must come out, just as a few spacing errors must be corrected, but I'll wait until this question is settled. I finally picked up a copy of Marvel Preview #7 and #4... no Raccoons in #4, but issue #7 has a Raccoon starting on pages 56-62 and he calls himself "Rocky" on page 57. He speaks with a cockney (?) accent ("old bean," "I say old man," "Old sock," "Jolly good show," "Sticky wicket," etc...). He isn't wearing his rocket boots, and he is wearing some sort gladiator armor. Hmmm. Antmusic (talk) 03:34, 29 March 2008 (UTC)

In the back of the very first issue of the miniseries there is a afterword about Rocket raccoon where the creator/author himself acknowledges Rockets first appearance is in Marvel Preview. Why the confusion? --Wiskayjack (talk) 19:28, 31 March 2010 (UTC)

Given Wiskayjack's and the Official Handbook 's statements, I'm going to change the article to flatly say he made his first appearance in Preview. I see no legitimate grounds for objection in anything else said here. Oh, BTW, those quotes from MP #7 are British, but not Cockney. --Tbrittreid (talk) 21:59, 15 April 2010 (UTC)

It's actually the editor - Carl Potts - who wrote the text in the back of the first issue, and he references Marvel Preview #16, not MP #7. No raccoons in MP #16, so it's probably a mistake, and the general idea is still true - someone at Marvel is saying it's the same character - but this entry should probably be updated to say that it's not Mantlo himself confirming it.

Rewrite request

Inspired Science Dog?

Is there anyway this character inspired the character Science Dog from the Invincible comic series? That series draws heavily from Marvel and DC and parodies many of the characters there. raccoon or raccoon-like?

Television:

A recurring gag [in season 2 of Ultimate Spider-Man] is that he has been referred to a lot as a raccoon when it is stated that his species resembles raccoons.

An extended promotional preview on USA Network on 7/20/2014 hints at this ambiguity with an exchange between Quill and Rocket:

Quill: "I've had a lot of folks try to kill me over the years, but I ain't about to be brought down by a tree and a talking raccoon."

Rocket: "What's a raccoon?"

Quill: "What's a raccoon? That's what you are, stupid!"

Rocket: "There ain't nothing like me, 'cept me."

First film appearance

Probably too trivial to include, but the first time Rocket Raccoon can be seen in a movie goes back to 1984, when a character can be seen reading Incredible Hulk issue 271 in, of all films, Supergirl. --Nat Gertler (talk) 17:40, 16 August 2018 (UTC)
