How detailed should this be? The rock cycle is usually introduced in elementary science, but the details of, for instance the Wilson cycle (see ext. links), could be developed into a lengthy article. Vsmith 03:00, 28 July 2005 (UTC)

I've been trying to work out how to incorporate more detial on that info into the artilce, along with infomation on the hydrological cycle since water is neseccary for weathering- but haven't come up with anything yet. But obviously they need to be talked about since they drive the cycle. Mabye the actual cycle could be described in a section called Forces driving the rock cycle, or more simply the rock cycle. I've also been searching for information on who came up with the concept, but no luck there so far either.--nixie 23:08, 28 July 2005 (UTC)

• I like your idea with forces driving the rock cycle. i went ahead and created the section headers. I think we should also discuss the Wilson cycle and the Tectonic Rock Cycle in this article, they're not very difficult concepts, and would be harder to understand outside the context of this article. It might be clear to explain the role of plate tectonics in the rock cycle in the context of the Wilson cycle.--nixie 05:05, 29 July 2005 (UTC)

I've put my thoughts into a preliminary version of the plate tectonics section, saved as work in progress at User:Vsmith/experimental/rock cycle. Right now it's just as it flowed off the top of my head, will be modifying & cleaning it over the next couple days - take a look and let me know what you think here. Water cycle

I've tried to start writing this section a few times, I think it might be better if the section was called weathering- or something like that. Then the section could describe water, gravity, and so on. --nixie 05:00, 3 August 2005 (UTC)

Merge

A new article on the formation of rocks has recently been created: Rock cycle in kids perspective. But Wikipedia does not usually have articles on topics "in kids perspective" - we have one article per topic. The "kids perspective" article seems to cover much of the same material as this one, plus some miscellany. If it includes any details that don't appear here (or in related articles like lithification) they should be brought into this article. FreplySpang 02:10, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

New diagram

I just created this new diagram based on a German-language one on Commons, because I thought that its portrayal was much cleaner and more straightforward. However, it isn't graphical.
