Proposed moving

I believe it would be better if this page were renamed Murder of Robert Krentz since his notoriety nationwide did not happen until after his murder. Americus55 (talk) 17:59, 7 April 2010 (UTC)

I have to disagree. He himself was not notable to a Wikipedia article worthy extent, but his death put his name in the minds of many Americans. However, since he died, he has become notable. So I think we should rename the page "Murder of Robert Krentz", see what we can dig up on the murder, and include a little back story as to who he was, but the main point should be the aftermath of his death.

As far as his notability goes, he had been the recipient of a major award (state ranching Hall of Fame) and had been a subject of multiple news stories and reports over a period of several years prior to his death, both of which made him notable before his death. I got involved with this article when I heard about the murder. I did a search for "Rob Krentz" on Wikipedia, and was surprised to find no article. I then decided to create an article, intending to call it "Murder of Rob Krentz" just as you suggest, on the basis of WP:SINGLEEVENT. However, in researching the article, I was surprised to find many references to prior statements he had made on the question of illegal immigration. That led me to the half-dozen or so articles about him from prior to the murder, including the PBS interview. Based on that, I also came to the conclusion, like User:Moogwrench, there there was enough media coverage of him as a person prior to the murder to justify a free-standing article. I then created the article "Rob Krentz" and only then discovered the "Robert Krentz" article already in existance. So my decision wasn't swayed by the fact that the article had already been created as such; I came to the same conclusion independently. —Rnickel (talk) 18:03, 3 May 2010 (UTC)

Focus on suspect "in the US"

I also saw that Arizona Star story on May 3rd, as well as the follow-up that it provoked the following day. If you look at my edits of May 3-4, you will see the article following news as it developed. The original (much more provacative) headline of the May-3 Arizona Star article was "Focus in Krentz killing on American". This was huge news, and I immediately updated the article to reflect that. That story quoted an "unnamed official", and right after it broke, another contrary story appeared in the Associated Press, also quoting an "unnamed official", and clarifying that, while the suspect might be within U.S. borders, the focus continued to be on a Mexican suspect. The Arizona Star was forced to retract their original headline and attach a correction to the story, which you can see in the very reference you cited if you look at the "Editor's Note" midway down on the right-hand side. In response to the whole brewhaha, the Cochise county Sheriff's office made statements to the Sierra Vista Herald that yes, in fact, the investigation continues to focus on a Mexican perpetrator.

Both the AP story and the Sierra Vista Herald story are cited in the article; please read them. I don't think the misleading Arizona Star article really adds anything. If you wanted to mention it, it would have to be in the context of "claim followed by corrections followed by retraction", but I think that's a lot of ink on a side topic. This is an article about Robert Krentz, not about the much broader topic of sensationalism in the media. --Rnickel (talk) 16:46, 28 May 2010 (UTC)
