Can someone confirm whether or not RGS III is related to or a descendant of Robert Gould Shaw, the colonel of the 54th Mass. Regiment? Shaw was married, but there is no mention of children. Just curious, as his father's listed as "Bob Shaw" and could possibly be Robert Gould II. Morhange 22:45, 30 September 2005 (UTC)
- I'm not sure. I found out about him while researching Nancy Astor. It mentioned his father, but outside of being from a wealthy New York family I don't recall specifics. I could look it up later maybe.--T. Anthony 09:05, 23 October 2005 (UTC)
- Okay I found this. "Her(Nancy Astor's) first husband was Robert Gould Shaw II, nephew of the leader of the black Massachusetts 54"[1]. Sorry but this is incorrect information. Robert Gould Shaw II was the son of Quincy Adams Shaw, uncle to Col. Robert Gould Shaw. So Shaw II would have been one of his many cousins. So Shaw III was a distant cousin of the famous RGS. C. Denny
If only I could guess my acquaintance C. Denny - much appreciated reflection on the genealogy. Yes, RGS II, first married to Nancy Langhorne, was the son of Quincy Adams Shaw. Quincy's brother was Colonel Robert Gould Shaw of the 54th's father, hence RGS and RGS II were cousins. I would contest that RGS III is a bit closer than a distant cousin of Col. RGS, as Col. - Is he? I have to admit I think his story is interesting, that's why I made the article, but I'm not sure if he's very notable outside his parents. I was thinking maybe we could make this a redirect to the Nancy Astor article, which I'm pretty sure mentions much of his life. (Including arrest and suicide)--T. - That could be fine also. But for arguement sake do all these minor nobles and royalty get articles for? Its because they were made famous because of their parents. I'm trying to find articles written about his trial, but hard to track down British articles on the internet from that era. Oh well.Callelinea (talk)
Keep, AfD, or Redirect edit
The decline of the prod indicated it could be sent to AfD. An idea considered here is making it a redirect to Nancy Astor, Viscountess Astor. And finally we could just keep as is.--T. Anthony (talk) 02:02, 8 June 2011 (UTC)
- I pulled the Prod on the technical grounds that it was not uncontroversial because of the talk page discussion. However, if it went to AfD, I think that it would have zero chance of surviving. Having said that, considering that this place is stuffed full of minor pop stars and the like, it wouldn't bother me if it just remained since, as you say, it is an interesting story. A good compromise solution would be to redirect to Nancy Astor, Viscountess Astor but add some key details by his entry. TerriersFan (talk) 02:20, 8 June 2011 (UTC)
- The article as written made no real claim of notability so I considered a speedy deletion. But I'm conservative in the way that I use my deletion tools, and since it had been around for a long time, and he was deceased, I decided to go the route of a Prod in case that someone had sources that would show notability independent of his family relationships. I agree that a redirect to [[Nancy Astor, Viscountess is a acceptable outcome. But I think that we should make sure that any information in that article about him is well sourced. - I have just created the article Robert Gould Shaw II. Information about both of RGS II's marriages and both of his progeny is in that article, including all of the content of the RGS III article.
