Several sources have it that he never actually got the chance to do the job as Pres, but that he died of illness before he actually got the chance to serve. I can't remember whether this was yellow fever or malaria, however being from the North he may just not have been aware of the right precautions ? or maybe somebody should have taken better care of him, unless he was specifically given this job so that they could rid themselves of the founder of the American Colonization Soc ? I have wondered for sometime if maybe there might be some truth to that ideaJohn5Russell3Finley 23:21, 30 July 2006 (UTC) I guess that is a bit silly though, since one of his cousins also named Robert Finley was amoung the founders of Georgia, and maybe the famous Georgia hostility to Northerners might not even have existed until after the civil war John5Russell3Finley 23:27, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

I believe he immmediately went on a tour of Georgia once accepting the UGA job to promote the school and recruit students and became ill during those travels before coming back to Athens. If you have not done so already, check out History of the University of Georgia by Thomas Walter Reed; Frontmatter and Chapter I: The Beginnings of the University, Thomas Walter Reed, Imprint: Athens, Georgia : University of Georgia, ca. 1949. It states he took part in the commencement in the spring and then started his PR tour. That source also indicates that the UGA Board of Trustees was actively recruiting Finley for the job.--Roswell native 17:18, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

Samuel Finley

I'm wondering if there is a connection with the Rev. Samuel Finley (5th President of Princeton) or his brothers the Rev James Finley and Andrew Finley. It would seem like a coincidence if there wasn't some connection. Smallbones (talk) 23:58, 8 March 2011 (UTC)
