Cleanup

This article needs a lot of work by someone who has read the novel to make it a bit more nuetral in tone, or at least add some sources to back up the POV statements throughout. This caught my eye: "The book has withstood the test of time reasonably well because there are few references to technology." I can quickly think of about 20 books much older than this that have "withstood the test of time" despite being hard-SF, and full of technological references. -- Antepenultimate 02:33, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

Characters

This is one of my all-time favorite books. Wonderfully written.

I believe the author of this article mistook the the character based on the Marquis de Sade for Jack the Ripper, and have changed the article accordingly. I do not remember Jack the Ripper appearing in the novel, although I am momentarily unable to find my copy to verify that. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.18.54.188 (talk) 01:53, 3 February 2009 (UTC)

There is a different character earlier in the book, that, given some of the other unnamed but more obvious cameo's, could be taken as Jack the Ripper. He is a slim Victorian gentleman, seems a bit excited at a death and so on. Later another person comments about one of the people met at the inn being named Jack. It is not, however, clearly stated if if refers to the same person ( one is in a chapter following Red and the other in a chapter following Randy.) So while many draw the conclusion that it was Jack the Ripper, I think a good source is needed and unless there were other clues that one who knows more about Jack the Ripper would recognize or author conformation, it would remain speculation. 75.191.151.75 (talk) 00:41, 15 May 2011 (UTC)
