Civil war
editWhy aren't the gunboats used in the Civil War considered "river gunboats"? A great many of them were converted from Mississippi riverboats and other small craft (especially by the Confederates), and even the purpose-built ones were clearly not intended for operations on the open water. They were all shallow-draft vessels intended for use in rivers, either the Potomac or Mississippi or others. I see there is some mention of these vessels in the main article on "gunboat", but I was disappointed at how little coverage they had..45Colt 15:21, 20 March 2014 (UTC)
- I have had a large coffee table book Warships and Naval Battles of the Civil War for decades. The Union and rebel brown water navies are a fascinating subject. Re-checking. Most riverine gunboats appear to be conversions, design-purpose commercial river craft with added arms and sometimes added armor. A lot are one of a kind by converted by volunteers with little formal naval training. The WP article appears to focus on design-purpose riverine gunboats adopted by established navies. -- Naaman Brown (talk) 12:06, 28 July 2017 (UTC)
