Political views edit

Torn is said to be an active supporter of conservative causes but the article makes no mention of this. Is there any reason for this?

Reason: conventional code of silence regarding Hollywood conservatives. That which is not recognized does not exist.

That's pretty snarky and inappropriate. Wikipedia requires links to originally sourced material and isn't here for rumor mills. If there is credible evidence, then add a section and provide the links to back up whatever you add.

It's Wikipedia, after all. Anyone can edit a page. You don't have to wait for someone else to do it. --Jplflyer (talk) 22:56, 10 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Freemason edit

OK, Rip is listed as a Freemason, but the article does NOT mention this. Suggest deletion if there is no evidence. Evertype 23:32, 9 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Name edit

It would be nice to get an explanation of his name change. -- Sy / (talk) 22:38, 10 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Good call, if his father's surname is "Torn," how was he born with a different name? TuckerResearch (talk) 03:22, 2 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Coming Apart edit

I am amazed that this article does not mention the movie Coming Apart (1969). The movie is an unusual experiment that purports to be covertly filmed by the main character, a psychiatrist played by Torn, who installs a motion picture camera in his NY apartment living room. It depicts the comings and goings of several confused women love interests as the psychiatrist progressively undergoes personality disintegration, coming apart. It is mentioned, in the Filmography section. — O'Dea (talk) 11:14, 4 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

BeastMaster edit

This may not have been one of his best roles, but probably be worth mentioning. Also, looking at what was typed up, a lot of the info here is mixed up by date.158.35.225.230 15:43, 16 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

The Man Who Fell To Earth edit

Rip Torn also appeared in the movie, The Man Who Fell to Earth along side David Bowie. He played the character Dr. Bryce. —Preceding unsigned comment added by DLNorton (talkcontribs) 00:46, 21 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

I've added a note to that effect (after doing more sweeping edits to the The Man Who Fell to Earth article) but as other commenters have noted, the career section is in dire need of a complete overhaul and a standard filmography section is still absent. - Dravecky (talk) 06:40, 10 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Filmography? edit

I couldn't help but notice that this article is devoid of a filmography section. Maybe someone with some time to spare could set up one for this article? If you need one to model it after, here's an example. Thanks. CherryFlavoredAntacid (talk) 04:25, 1 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Education edit

Rip Torn went to Texas A&M University in addition to the University of Texas, so I think it should be reflected in the article. The following three links are just a few of many that point this out:

http://www.answers.com/topic/rip-torn

http://www.observer.com/2008/tough-guys-are-time-rip-torn-males-mailer-mccain-and-barfight-lakeville

Also, there's some slight discrepancy as to what Rip Torn studied. Two of the articles say animal husbandry and another says acting. I don't know for sure what's correct, but I'm sure the article that says acting is just making an assumption since he's an actor now. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Thekeller (talkcontribs) 02:03, 10 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

The first two don't qualify for WP:RS, but the third should. It'd be nice to have another source to back it up, since (as you mention) his major seems to be unclear. tedder (talk) 02:15, 10 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Torn would have attended the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas, not Texas A&M University, since it did not yet exist under that name when he was there.
Whether or not it was his major, he must have done some acting at the University of Texas, because I was issued a costume helmet from the UT drama department with his name in it in the early sixties. His head must be smaller than mine, since I had to pull out quite a bit of padding.
I changed the opening of the Film career section from "At Texas A&M" to "At University of Texas" because Ben Iden Payne was never at Texas A&M. He worked heavily at the University of Texas as can be seen in Ben Iden Payne's own article page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.110.179.62 (talk) 23:13, 29 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Residence edit

The section "Alcohol–related incidents" states that he broke into the "Litchfield Bancorp branch office in Salisbury, Connecticut, where he maintains a residence." The structure of this sentence makes it sound as though he resides in the office building. Since this is a direct copy of a newspaper article, the blame goes to the journalist who wrote the original news article.Lestrade (talk) 05:25, 31 January 2010 (UTC)LestradeReply

Latest alleged offenses edit

Why is the January 29, 2010 incident in the subsection Alcohol-related incidents? Was he intoxicated at the time? Lkjhgfdsa 0 (talk) 04:49, 1 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

"From the article "He was charged with carrying a firearm without a permit, carrying a firearm while intoxicated", So im gonna go with... yes.--173.210.212.10 (talk) 00:39, 2 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

The reference cited for rehab after the bank break in (12) makes no mention of "farm porn" or "heroin"... Don't know how to change it... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.17.28.71 (talk) 08:19, 18 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Burn After Reading edit

Rip Torn was Osborne Cox's father in "Burn After Reading." MORON!!!!

...couldn't agree more.

Reference 8 edit

Ref 8 has moved to http://www.eonline.com/uberblog/b48556_Rip_Torn_Cleared_of_DUI.html I'd change it but I don't know how sorry.Kernel Corn (talk) 07:42, 2 February 2010 (UTC) OK, done. Kernel Corn (talk) 23:29, 2 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Early Life edit

Rip Torn is not the brother of Sam Torn (owner of Camp Ozark) as stated. He is somehow a cousin. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.186.250.18 (talk) 15:38, 30 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Civil Rights edit

This article: <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baldwin%E2%80%93Kennedy_meeting indicates that Rip Torn was present at a meeting with the then Attorney General regarding civil rights in America. I can find no mention of this in the wikipedia article for him. Is his involvement/activism something that is well known/documented? Should it be included? Look Away edit

The Broadway section lists him as having directed Look Away, and a quick google seems to confirm that, but the link there leads to the Chicago song. The play doesn't appear to have a page. 72.220.192.155 (talk) 09:23, 6 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
