Other versions

What about the other versions of Ring that seem to be missing from here? The 1995 TV movie (and its later uncut VHS release) which actually introduces a few elements later taken and improved on in Ring (1998) (Sadako appearing to Ryuji the day after he sees the video, Sadako appearing to kill Ryuji (albeit not from a TV in this one), Asakawa's investigation being moved to shortly after Tomoko dies as opposed to a month later like in the novel, etc.), the 1996 Radio Drama (where Asakawa is a Radio DJ, there's a young girl instead of Ryuji, and the cursed tape is an audio tape), the 1999 TV series that significantly changes the story (the victims get 13 days instead of 7, the video is an interference between a legitimate broadcast of a music video rather than directly recorded and its effect get blamed on that video's song (Shiroi yo by Matsuzaki Nao), etc.), the sequel of that - the 1999 Rasen TV series, which includes a significantly different plot compared to the novel, the original novel-based manga (with slight differences compared to the novel), the 1998 movie tie-in manga (with important differences compared to the movie), its sequel (manga adaptation of Ring 2), manga adaptations of Rasen and Birthday with significant differences compared to the novel, and the manga of Ring 0: Birthday? They need to be somehow mentioned.

Also the timeline puts Birthday after Loop even though one of its short stories, Floating Coffin, is actually essentially an outtake of Rasen. - OBrasilo (talk) 01:11, 27 February 2015 (UTC)

The current version's table lists "Ring 2" under the heading "Ring (1991) → Suzuki novel Japan", but the Ring 2 article says the film is "a new sequel to Ring, not based on Suzuki's works".

And then there's a sentence:

"The Rasen (Spiral) film of 1998 was an alternative sequel to Ring, made by a different production company, which moved the story closer to that of the novels."

But Ring 2 came out in 1999, so it is the alternative, not Rasen.

I'm going to do some checking, but my suspicion is that a lot of the info in the table needs to be clarified. Anyone got any pointers for me? Great floors (talk) 17:54, 16 February 2017 (UTC)

But, tables are easier to read sometimes, so I think I'll come back in a day or two and also add a new table with release dates, directors, which book/film it's an adaptation/sequel of, etc. (I mean, I'll make a new table. P.S. Many thanks to the person who made the original flowchart-style table. It's the format I would have tried too. I tried to preserve the original table by just fixing its info, but in the end, the relation between these 12 films and the books is very non-linear that it was unworkable. The relationship is very linear. The Ring film had sequels, they are directly related to each other. Ring 2 is the sequel to Ring 1, based on Ring 1 (not on any book) Ring 1 is directly based on the book, since the sequel is based on Ring 1, it is also based on the book The Ring, and not on the second book; Ring 0 is also based on the book Birthday, and a prequel to the film Ring 1 -- 67.70.35.17 (talk) 11:25, 20 August 2017 (UTC)

The American films are also linear, The Ring is based on the film and the book. The Ring Two is a new material sequel not based on the second book but based on the film The Ring. Rings is a sequel. -- 67.70.35.17 (talk) 11:27, 20 August 2017 (UTC)

"Rasen" is correctly stated, and alternative sequel, since it is an alternative to "Ring 2", it is from a different production company, with different director, based on a different book. Ring 2 is based on Ring 1, which is based on the book The Ring; while Rasen is based on the book The Spiral. -- 67.70.35.17 (talk) 11:30, 20 August 2017 (UTC)
