Citizenship

There was no People's Republic of China when he was born. The national flag should be corrected. Maybe Shanghai was occupied by Japanese troops at war?--Jusjih 02:20, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

The GoBase page at here says that he was born in Shanghai, China, but his nationality is Taiwanese. Now I'm even more perplexed. Can 05:38, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

After China was divided into the Republic of China and the People's Republic of China following the Chinese Civil War, each Chinese government considers itself solely legitimate. Saying that his nationality is Taiwanese is because even though the ROC considers Mainlanders its nationals of the Mainland Area instead of foreigners, Rin Kaiho is an ROC national of the Taiwan Area while he has never acquired Japanese nationality. Japan considers Taiwanese to be Chinese nationals when issuing Alien Registration Cards. It has caused confusions and scares while Mainland Chinese have the highest crime rate among aliens in Japan.--Jusjih 08:35, 30 March 2006 (UTC)

You have not removed the perplexity. He was born in Shanghai which is not in Taiwan. One would expect him to be a citizen of (mainland) China. According to the bio, he didn't go to Japan until 1952 - after the split between mainland China and Taiwan. To call him "Taiwanese" instead of Chinese requires a reference to a reliable source. There are web pages stating he's a citizen of Taiwan, but I'm not sure they meet Wikipedia's standards for reliable sources. See for example https://senseis.xmp.net/?RinKaiho and https://www.usgo-archive.org/news/2017/11/the-power-report-2-of-2-rin-kaiho-receives-decoration-in-autumn-honors-ichiriki-to-challenge-for-kisei/ I've added a source saying he lived in Taiwan for some years, but that's not the same thing. Rin Kaiho's place in Go history

Guo Juan makes a reference to an important role Rin Kaiho played in changing basic openings (for white, after a chinese opening), in her 2007-07 video: Lecture 1 by Guo Juan 5p part 4. That innovation should certainly be entered here in recognition of Rin Kaiho's contributions to Go.
