Hall of Fame: Unanimous

Rickey should be the first Hall of Famer ever elected unanimously. Who wants to start a campaign?

Speech (this doesn't really need to be here)

"It took a long time, huh? (Pause for cheers). First of all, I would like to thank God for giving me the opportunity. I want to thank the Haas family, the Oakland organization, the city of Oakland, and all you beautiful fans for supporting me. (Pauses for cheers). Most of all, I'd like to thank my mom, my friends, and loved ones for their support. I want to give my appreciation to Tom Trebelhorn and the late Billy Martin. Billy Martin was a great manager. He was a great friend to me. I love you, Billy. I wish you were here. (Pauses for cheers). Lou Brock was the symbol of great base stealing. But today, I'm the greatest of all time. Thank you."

This sounds like the standard victory/award speech. Henderson thanked God and his mother, as well as the people that helped him in baseball. All that is remembered, however, is the "I am the greatest of all time" quote, which has been taken out of context to support the notion that Henderson is selfish and arrogant.

"Correctly"

The article included the sentence "Many include him among the greatest baseball players of all time, including Rickey himself." I changed this to "Many (correctly) include ...". This was changed back because it was supposedly "opinion". I understand this attitude in general, but in this specific case I disagree, for two reasons: (1) I challenge you to find anyone remotely knowledgable about baseball history who does not think that Rickey Henderson is among the greatest players of all time. (2) The phraseology "many include him" was clearly intended not as an equivocation, but rather as a lead-in to the "funny" statement "... including Rickey himself". The sentence is not an indication of debate about his place among the greats - there is no debate on that matter. Rather, the sentence is a statement on the fact that Rickey is commonly perceived to have a highly developed sense of self-importance. Therefore, I am changing this sentence back to include the word "correctly". -Rwv37 18:32, 13 November 2005 (UTC)

How about: "Many, including Ricky himself, include him among the greatest baseball players of all time--an opinion supported by his career statistics." ?? it's still an opinion, but it provides substantiation, and I think fixes a minor grammar hiccup. Binkymagnus 21:27, 13 November 2005 (UTC)

I know that this debate has long been resolved, and the inciting sentence entirely since removed; however, as this has only today come to my attention, I'd like to clarify why I removed the "(correctly)". While I do not dispute that Henderson was probably the best in the leadoff role, it is clearly an opinion and contrary to encyclopedic element. A statement that is widely opined is still not a fact and thus should not be emphatically stated. Having the antecedent Many believe (or variants) is sufficient to indicate a common belief. Additionally, including the "(correctly)" in that sentence is simply bad form. -Casius 09:01, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

Coleman does not have the second-highest SB seasonal total; Lou Brock does.

It is fair to say that no one has approached Henderson's record of 130 since it was set; the runner-up is Coleman's 110. The difference, 20 stolen bases, puts Coleman approximately one month behind Henderson's pace.
