Name of page

edit

Consistancy might want this page to be titled Reuben (Biblical) --MathMan64 20:59, 27 January 2006 (UTC)

So I moved it to Reuben (Biblical figure) after seeing lots of similar pages. --MathMan64 21:23, 27 January 2006 (UTC)

Transliteration and more

edit

I am certainly no specialist about Biblical Hebrew, but etymons given here look strange to me — he saw [my misery] is given as «raa [beonyi]», while we say הוּא) רָאָה בֵעָווֹני) in modern Hebrew, with עָווֹן meaning sin, not 'misery', and that this ב־ preposition here is a mystery to me.
The same goes with yeehaba for «he will love» instead of יֹאהַב־ . Are there errors in this article or are Biblical and Modern Hebrew so different?
Once these points would have received a satisfactory answer, would it be possible to add vocalized Hebrew transliterations (and a precise, romanized version, with long vowels and glottal stops indicated), so that the Arabic one ( ربن , though the word is رِئْبال , actually, this /ribnāl/ meaning both lion and wolf, and appearing with the form given in the article in the singular only — by definition — as ابن ربن , son of a (ship) captain) can be added to this «Ra'abil», also a surprising word to me because of all these divergences of meaning and plural form. I am only hoping to learn more and get reliable information. Many thanks forward

I wanted to go to the equivalent German page, but it lead me to a — rather unuseful, actually — disambiguation page. In turn, the equivalent German article offers links to two articles: one sending us back to this article, the other to the tribe.
Apart from what could be done on the German pages, wouldn't it be better to use here the de:Ruben (Bibel) instead of de:Ruben (biblische Person)?

The page de:Ruben (biblische Person) has since been deleted; and this page currently does link to de:Ruben (Bibel). -- -- -- 18:43, 22 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

rename article

edit

Please consider renaming this article Reuben, son of Jacob as per Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Bible#standardized_way_of_naming_articles_for_biblical_persons. Lemmiwinks2 (talk) 21:13, 6 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Biblical references section

edit

I think the section on Jacob's anger towards Reuben should be restructured. Rather than begin by saying that Jacob gave Reuben's birthright to Joseph, which is not directly clear from the relevant Biblical passage (Genesis 49), I propose starting by directly quoting from Genesis 49:3-4 in which Jacob on his deathbed says Reuben will "no longer excel" for having "defiled" Jacob's bed (by sleeping with Bilhah). Then the article can refer to the classical rabbinical sources currently mentioned that argue Jacob was transferring Reuben's birthright to Jacob's other children. This is not a major change, but I think it will put the emphasis on the Biblical text, rather than the outside sources. Please share your thoughts. Thank you. I made a change along the lines I proposed above. Tygretus (talk) 22:02, 10 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
