REINA: QUEEN OF POP-DANCE MUSIC
Reina’s live performance on the nationally syndicated morning show, Live with Regis and Kelly, proved that the young powerhouse diva is ready to take modern pop and dance music to a whole new level. With the release of her debut album, This is Reina, she may just be, as Regis Philbin labeled her, this generation’s Donna Summer.
A true musical prodigy, Reina (which means “Queen” in Spanish) found her calling singing “Out Here On My Own” in her junior high school’s production of Fame. She first gained notoriety as a backup singer for Rhythm and Blues diva Deborah Cox and dance music artist Corina. In 1998, Reina released her debut single, “Find Another Woman,” produced by Grammy Award winner Hex Hector, on the Groovilicious/Strictly Rhythm label. The song became an instant dance classic, climbing to number two on Billboard’s Hot Dance chart and achieving a “Best Dance Song” nomination at Miami’s Winter Music Conference. Her next single, “Anything for Love,” followed soon after, and similarly landed on the Billboard charts.
In 2002, music veteran Cory Robbins signed Reina to his label, Robbins Entertainment/BMG, to release her first full-length album. Reina labored tirelessly, co-writing many of the songs, and selecting material that held a special meaning to her. She was adamant that all songs on the album have lyrics she could feel. “I could not and will not sing a song unless I’m moved by the story it’s telling,” she explains.
Reina’s next single, “No One’s Gonna Change You,” hit Rhythmic CHR radio and crossed over to Billboards pop chart at the end of 2003. It quickly became a #1 radio request and a dance floor staple. The single raised anticipation for the album, and Robbins Entertainment wisely answered by hastening production. In October 2004, fans rejoiced when Reina’s debut full-length album, the aptly titled “This Is Reina,” finally dropped. Along with the album, Robbins released Reina’s next smash single, “If I Close My Eyes.” The song became the young singer/songwriter’s second crossover success, playing simultaneously on the nation’s Rhythmic CHR and Top 40 stations, where it currently remains in rotation. Reina’s next release was the emotionally charged, soul stirring, “Forgive,” followed by her duet with Lucas Prata entitled “Love Of My Life.” Her hypnotic first ballad, “On My Own” has debuted, and is currently climbing the charts.
Born and raised in the Bronx, New York, the stunning, bi-racial Reina recognizes a number of influences, most notably her ultra-supportive mother who as a child, told her every night before she went to bed, “You were born for greatness.”
