Salmon Lane Lock?

I have created a redirect Salmon_Lane_Lock since I believe that Salmon's_Lane_Lock is incorrect. The lock is called Salmon Lane Lock since the road nearby is called Salmon Lane. Gordo (talk) 12:47, 26 August 2011 (UTC)

If you are correct the page should be moved to that name with the incorrect version as a redirect. It will help if you can find sources using this name such as local history books and council or British Waterways records.--Charles (talk) 13:11, 26 August 2011 (UTC)

I'm pretty sure you are right. It is for example given as Salmon Lane Lock in the relevant Nicholson Guide, Grand Union, Oxford & the South East. Guides to the waterways. Nicholson. 2003. ISBN 0-00-713664-1. I suggest you move the page. Pterre (talk) 13:19, 26 August 2011 (UTC)

Who was Thomas Homer?

This article states since 2004 (see here) that the Regent's Canal was "first proposed by Thomas Homer in 1802..." Wondering about this person, I started searching for more info about this person and found some info, such as:

• It is a history of the Regent's Canal, illustrated by old maps and engravings, and by a set of photographs of the Canal to-day, ... But the original idea had come from Thomas Homer, who ended his career ingloriously with transportation...
  • Port of London. Vol. 37. (1962). p. 23

• In 1810 Thomas Homer, an original shareholder in the Grand Union canal, got in touch with John Nash...
  • Time & Tide . Vol. 51. (1970) p. 92

• ... soon after 1800 was one Thomas Homer (cf Homer Street and Homer Row), anxious to catch a rise in property values near the new canal junction at Paddington and active for a while, in an embezzling sort of way, in Nash's Regent's Canal

• During the making of the Regent's Canal between Paddington and {Camden Town] ... Much money was lost in such ways but even more was stolen soon afterwards by Mr Thomas Homer, superintendent of the works, a much respected man who had launched the whole ploy but put no money into it.

These sources seem to confirm, that Thomas Homer promoted the plan, and even two streets are named after him. However, a continuing search into 19th century sources found hardly any source linking Homer to the Regent's Canal. The only direct link was:

• Thomas Homer, Auditor to the Grand Junction Canal Company...
  • Reports from Committees of the House of Commons: Repr. by Order of the House, Volume 10. House of Commons, 1803

• Thomas Homer, Auditor of the Accounts of the said Company of Property ...
  • Great Britain House of Commons (1803) Journals of the House of Commons Vol. 31. p. 193

These two sources confirm that Thomas Homer was an important spokesman of the Grand Junction Canal Company, who even testified at the Great Britain House of Commons, but no more. -- Mdd (talk) 23:12, 16 February 2014 (UTC)
