American Dialect Society ADS-L
edit(Lifted from Talk:Winning isn't everything; it's the only thing)
A search of the American Dialect Society ADS-L list post 1999 has some citations from the Los Angeles Times on Red Sanders' usage, as well as a book.[1]
"ART ROSENBAUM. Los Angeles Times (1886-Current File). Los Angeles, Calif.: Oct 18, 1950. p. C3 (1 page): Here's one on Red Sanders, as told by himself this summer at Cal Poly (San Luis Obispo) physical education workshop. Speaking about football victories, Sanders told his group: "Men, I'll be honest. Winning isn't everything. (Long pause.) Men, it's the only thing!" (Laughter.) "
David Maraniss' book on V. Lombardi, _When Pride Still Mattered_, p. 369: "As to the famous phrase, Shavelson said that it came from his Hollywood agent, who also happened to represent the colorful UCLA football coach Henry "Red" Sanders. "The agent quoted me the line once and said that he had heard Sanders say it," Shavelson recalled. "That's how it got in the script."
Red Sanders is also quoted in the December 26, 1955 issue of Sports Illustrated, which was right before the 1956 Rose Bowl in which his UCLA Bruins team participated. I do not have the actual issue, but I understand the quote reads, "Sure, winning isn't everything. It's the only thing." Group29 (talk) 14:43, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
Bill Veeck on Winning
editFrom Google: "think winning is the only thing" "bill veeck"
I do not think that winning is the most important thing. I think winning is the only thing. Bill Veeck (American Baseball Owner, 9 Feb 1914 - 2 Jan 1986)
"Beating USC isn’t a matter of life and death; it’s much more important than that."

HE DIED WITH A PROSTIUTE
editSeriously, instead of automatically reverting my edit, how about actually READING the article in footnote 4? It says it! Since when is it vandalism to actually include what the source material says? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 100.32.255.170 (talk) 22:45, 8 September 2015 (UTC)
"No repeat" rule
editMaybe the editor wanted to say that UCLA was the only PCC/Pac-8 team affected by the rule. Michigan State certainly was during the 1960s. 2600:1004:B148:E817:69B3:F6CD:8961:D605 (talk) 03:06, 16 September 2018 (UTC)
