Talk:Reciprocating pump

Latest comment: 13 years ago by GILDog

what will happen if the delivery valve of reciprocating pump is closed and pump start

Lets just assume that the pump is primed with a non-compressible fluid such as water or oil. I believe there are three possibilities:

  1. The fluid will leak past seals or clearances in the pump
  2. The pump will fail, or the drive powering the pump will slip or fail
  3. The pipeline downstream of the pump will fail

Depending on the system the outcome may be one or more of these simultaneously.

For this reason many systems, will incorporate a pressure relef valve so that the system is never entirely closed. --GILDog (talk) 07:28, 17 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
