Talk:Real Maryland F.C.

I got an email from Bienvenido Martinez, one of the primaries on the team, indicating they have not secured a home stadium as of July 23, 2007 where he says "we are going to play in the Wheaton, Rockville area. We are presently negotiating with two high schools, where we are going to committ some funds for improvements.."

I'll update the entry based on that email correspondence.

Name Change Proposal

According to their copyright and news articles on their website, the club officially refers to itself as "Real Maryland F.C." with the name "Real Maryland Monarchs" used as one of a number of secondary nicknames. I don't think it matters either way, really. Real Maryland Monarchs is the clearly WP:COMMONNAME, and is most likely to be the think people type in the search box, but I'm sure having it at Real Maryland FC would work too if we want to go down the "official" route. I would argue "Real Maryland" is the more common name but precedent from other team articles with an official name and a side nickname tends to lean towards the official. I wouldn't say the name "Real Maryland Monarchs" is very common at all according to their website. Yes, they nickname themselves the Monarchs but most news articles they post almost always refer to themselves as "Real Maryland F.C." on first references and "Real Maryland" thereafter. The full phrase "Real Maryland Monarchs" is hardly ever used. As for the template names, we wouldn't be saying "Toronto Reds" for Toronto FC even though they use that nickname on their website. --Blackbox77 (talk) 05:02, 23 May 2011 (UTC)

According to the PDL website it is. It's the title of the team's official page - http://www.uslsoccer.com/teams/2011/8969534.html - and it's how they appear in the schedule - http://pdl.uslsoccer.com/schedules/index_E.html. Toronto FC aren't referred to as such on the MLS site. It also appears in the Charleston Daily Mail's game report for the Real Maryland-WV Chaos game that way - http://www.dailymail.com/ap/ApTopStories/201105200632. I'm not saying that one is better than the other, and I fully acknowledge that there are news reports and such that refer to them as Real Maryland FC. You also correctly say that that the team's official name is Real Maryland FC, and I'm not arguing with that at all. I'm just saying that, in all the year's I've been directly involved with the USL and PDL as a staff member of two of its teams, they've always been referred to commonly as Real Maryland Monarchs, so it just makes sense to me to pipe it that way.
