Current use of the term

I thought these days, "rat race" is frequently used to refer to people who work in a dead end job until they retire at 65 with little savings. Perhaps there should be some mention of this on the page? -66.92.165.123 00:46, 15 May 2005 (UTC)

Remove the external link as it's advertisement and doesn't help to understand the notion itself but just provide a hook for a financially oriented website.

Removing second hatnote to Rat Race (2001 film)

I was about to remove the second hatnote linking to Rat Race (2001 film), but felt that a removal of it deserve more explanation than an edit summary could provide, and in the interest of not inciting any anger, I figured I'd mention it here and describe why before removing it.

As described at Wikipedia:Disambiguation and Wikipedia:Manual of Style (disambiguation pages), when there is a primary topic for a term, as there is in this case, the article for the topic is located at "Term", the associated disambiguation page is located at "Term (disambiguation)", and "Term" should have a hatnote linking to "Term (disambiguation)". You can see a variety of examples of how this plays out when redirects are present, etc., at Wikipedia:Disambiguation#Disambiguation_links. However, unless there is a particular reason for it, there is not usually a link to another page. Of course, there are always reasons to ignore the rules, and there are definitely times where the primary topic has been contentious enough that it was agreed upon to have a second link as a hatnote on what was given as a primary topic. I wish that I were able to link to some good examples of this, but I couldn't find one off hand. The short version is, unless there was some discussion about whether or not this article should have been the primary topic, it seems appropriate to have only the link to the disambiguation page here, which in turn links to all other possible uses of the term "Rat Race", including Rat Race (2001 film). I looked around to see if this had been discussed, but this talk page is quite short, and the edit where the link was added, [1], did not suggest if it were part of any discussion.

So, I'm removing the link to Rat Race (2001 film). If anyone disagrees or has questions about it, I'm happy to discuss it here. -- Natalya 23:12, 26 April 2011 (UTC)

Socrates

The Socrates quote in this article is unsourced, and probably incorrect. The Internet is full of such quotes attributed to famous individuals from history, a quick web search turns up no valid sources for this quote, and the wiki quote Socrates article also lists it as unsourced. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.104.2.238 (talk) 23:46, 17 August 2012 (UTC)

First use in print

Should mention the first use in print by Christopher Morely in his 1939 novel Kitty Foyle, New York: Grosset & Dunlap. pp. pp. 260–1, as referenced in Wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kitty_Foyle_(novel) "Their own private life gets to be a rat race." —Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.12.121.254 (talk) 16:05, 26 January 2010 (UTC)

As the "History" section doesn't give any history at all, including the first known use would be a definite improvement. The current history section should be given a different heading, perhaps "Meanings". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 172.77.211.9 (talk) 00:55, 28 June 2016 (UTC)
