I rated this article as a mid importance start. The product a regional foodstuff in South America without a large impact on the food industry as a whole. Wrong Information

Rapadura is not a juice, its a solid candy. The sugar cane juice is called "garapa" or "caldo de cana". 200.152.225.182 (talk)

Proposed merge to Jaggery

Rapadura and jaggery seem to be the same thing, and in fact the article lists "rapadura" as the name of the foodstuff in Brazil. Therefore they should be merged, although perhaps the "Rapadura controversy" could be made into a separate article. All the best, --Jorge Stolfi (talk) 14:22, 19 February 2010 (UTC)

Rapunzel controversy

The article suggests that Rapunzel no longer uses the name rapadura. However, I recently bought a bag of "RAPUNZEL RAPADURA Vollrohrzucker" (Vollrohrzucker = whole cane sugar). "RAPUNZEL RAPADURA" is also a registered trademark at DPMA (the German patent and trademark office). I can't explain everything, but what's noteworthy is:

• There were no objections in the three month objection period. It's still possible to contest a trademark after the objection period but the legal requirements are considerably higher since you need to file a "negative Feststellungsklage" (roughly lawsuit of invalidation) and more/better evidence is required.
• The trademark does not totally protect the term "rapadura", trademarks protect uses that are similar enough to the whole trademark to potentially confuse the customer. IANAL, but e.g. "Hartmann Rapadura" might be considered legitimate because the sound and spelling of the first word are radically different, whereas "Karfunkel Rapadurum" might be considered infringing, even though the word rapadura is altered, because the overall speech melody is similar. Both spelling and sound must not be similar. (Confusing, isn't it?)
• I am not aware of any other product sold in Germany with the name of rapadura though. Competing whole cane sugar products include e.g. "granoVita Ur-Süße", "GEPA Bio Mascobado Vollrohrzucker" and "NATURATA SUCANAT".
