Uploading photo

edit

I tried to upload https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/235487415 to Wikipedia, and got a notice that this page was semiprotected. It directed me to an empty page of admin blocks that wasn't helpful - I'm not sure why I can't upload a photo of the species. Richlitt (talk) 08:07, 13 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

There are several decent images you can use on Wikimedia commons. It's very difficult to upload images to Wikipedia these days due to copyright and licensing issues. If it's your own work, and you can release the rights, it should be reasonably easy, otherwise not. Big Blue Cray(fish) Twins (talk) 19:06, 13 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
It was my own work. I don't understand the process of adding a photo to an article; is there a guide for that? Richlitt (talk) 21:37, 13 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
See Wikipedia:Images for an overview, with links to show you the exact syntax you need to add photos. I will add some Commons images to the article to show you the basics. Big Blue Cray(fish) Twins (talk) 21:43, 13 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Richlitt:, any images you have that you want to be used on Wikipedia should be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. Go here:commons:Special:UploadWizard. Wikipedia itself doesn't host images in most circumstances (the main exception is that Wikipedia will lost low-resolution versions of copyrighted images with a claim to fair use of the image; Commons doesn't want to have anything to do with copyrighted images). Thank you! That is useful. Uploaded my first photo to Wikipedia. Oh no. Richlitt (talk) 09:36, 14 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
