Help edit

  • @Ms Sarah Welch:, help this new editor in this article with improvements and suggestions. You may review his DYK submission as well. -Nizil (talk) 10:38, 18 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Nizil Shah, I'm not that new, I have created 30 articles already, :) but thanks for helping. Also, you linked Satnami sect to the Satnami article, but are you really sure it's the correct one? There are at least three different sects that call themselves Satnami, the one referred to in this article was founded by Ghasidas. I'm not sure the current Satnami article is about the correct one. Also, if you are familiar with copyright stuff, check the photo. It's from People's Archive of Rural India, I'm not sure if the uploader who calls themselves "Ruralindiaonline" (domain of People's Archive) really is who they claim and have the permission to upload the image. @TryKid:, sorry for considering you new editor. I found your DYK nomination and believed that you are new. I have unlinked Satnami as I did not know that there are three Satnami named sects. The images are found here on PARI and here on an official website of Joydip Mitra who owns it. PARI content is licensed under CC-BY-NC-ND while Joydip Mitra website has no license notice. So I assume that these images are copyrighted. I also read your comment on uploader's talkpage. You can email Joydip Mitra from his website for any clarification or have his images released for Wikipedia. So as of now, I think you should not include the image in DYK due to doubtful copyright status. Regards,-Nizil (talk) 11:49, 18 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Nizil Shah, I've emailed Joydip for clarification, I hope he reaches back to me. I've also removed the image for the meantime, but I don't really have knowledge about Commons to follow the right procedure for situations like this. Very grateful for your assistance.😊 no need to say sorry, I did say this was my first DYK and I really am pretty new relative to you!TryKid (talk) 12:18, 18 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
TryKid, I'm not seeing any major red flags for that image -- that uploader has uploaded a lot of photos, and it doesn't look like any have been deleted for copyvio? —valereee (talk) 17:17, 20 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Valereee:, I took a precautionary measure in removing it. What chance there is that PARI makes a Wikimedia Commons account, doesn't tell anything about it on their user page or website and uploads a just a few images instead of the bulk of the content they have? The reason the file were not deleted may be that no one noticed them on Commons? I've posted a message at commons:Commons:Village pump/Copyright to get the opinion of commons regulars who are more familiar to the copyright stuff. TryKid (talk) 17:52, 20 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
I'll be very interested to see what their take on it is! :) —valereee (talk) 17:56, 20 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Valereee:, the post on Commons isn't getting any response, should we just go ahead and use it on the article and the DYK? TryKid (talk) 15:50, 22 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

TryKid, yes, if the people at Commons thought this was a problem, they would be jumping all over it. :) There are also experts at DYK. Also we have plenty of time, it'll probably be weeks before this appears. —valereee (talk) 16:03, 22 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

thanks GRuban, but now I feel dumb edit

I didn't even think of searching on Commons with a space between Ram and Nami. Google needs to up it's image finding algorithm. Teach me your superior image finding skills, @GRuban: senpai! TryKid[dubiousdiscuss] 00:40, 10 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Ah now I get it. You got it from a YouTube channel and cropped it. I had previously done this but didn't think of it again. I feel even dumber now. TryKid[dubiousdiscuss] 00:46, 10 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
Don't feel dumb. Google's free licensed image finding algorithm used to be better three years ago, when it would find Creative Commons licensed YouTube videos. When I was in charge of it; I'm George Ruban. --GRuban (talk) 01:45, 10 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
