Mother Earth prays to Lord Vishnu for deliverance against the atrocious crimes being committed by demon-king Ravan of Lanka. Lord Vishnu promises to take birth as a human, specifically as Ram, the prince of Ayodhya. A childless king, Dashratha of Ayodhya performs the Putra-Kamyeshthi fire ritual under the guidance of Sage Shringi and is blessed to soon become a father. Of his three wives, the eldest queen Kaushalya gives birth to Ram, the youngest queen Kaikeyi gives birth to Bharat, and the second queen Sumitra gives birth to Laxman and Shatrughn. Dashrath becomes attached to his eldest son Ram and is saddened when the four princes are sent to Gurukul for years to be educated under Sage Vashisht. A decade later, the four princes return to Ayodhya and everything seems well. However, after only a short interval Sage Vishwamitra comes to Ayodhya and asks the king for Ram and Laxman. With a heavy heart, King Dashratha sends away his sons to help the sage from demons.
