Subjectivity? edit

" It is one of the most authoritative and professional sources of information in Russia and abroad." This sounds very familiar from the pre-1989 period...

Is it just me, edit

or is the agency unreachable on the Web from NATO countries since this little "armed conflict in the Caucasus" really got underway? Dysmorodrepanis (talk) 13:57, 10 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Eastern bloc edit

If RIA Novosti traces it history through Soviet era, it was a part of the Soviet propaganda machine, and should be seealsoed. Easy as an apple pie. ΔιγουρενΕμπρος! 13:04, 13 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Removed the following paragraph because it was not clear exactly where the quotation came in. There were no quotation marks or anything else to so indicate:

During the Soviet times, state-run news agencies participated in Eastern Bloc information dissemination. According to Tomas Schuman, a.k.a. Yuri Bezmenov, in his book Love Letter To America (1984 W.I.N. Almanac Panorama, ISBN 0-935090-13-4) The Novosti Press Agency exists to produce slanted and false stories to plant in the foreign media. The term for this KGB effort is "disinformation". The Novosti Press Agency is the communist equivalent of the Ministry of Truth from the George Orwell novel 1984.

Official name edit

Their official English language Web site lists them as "The Russian News & Information Agency RIA Novosti": [1] This seems authoritative enough, so I am adding the "The" and the "& News" part to the intro line. 74.72.103.79 (talk) 03:07, 4 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Well, I can see why you would think that, but it seems that all the other pages on the RIA website refer simply to "RIA Novosti." The page you referred to simply explains in the headline what RIA Novosti is; that is, "The [only] Russian news & information agency." Unfortunately, the headline used a kaps-and-lower-case style so it looks like the cited phrase is part of the name instead of a phrase explaining just what RIA Novosti actually is. I'm taking the liberty of changing the article back in the belief that it should be that way. Your friend, GeorgeLouis (talk) 01:19, 6 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

The direct translation is "Russian International News Agency", and not Information. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.205.21.241 (talk) 15:20, 27 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Archived versions of RIA Novosti's reports on its own liquidation:

We never know when everything's gonna be taken down and should go and archive all ria.ru references. Would be great if there was a bot doing that for us... --PanchoS (talk) 07:44, 10 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

mistake in transcription edit

The transcription of "Федеральное государственное унитарное предприятие Российское агентство международной информации «РИА Новости»", is rather ..." Federal'noye Gosudarstvennoye Unitarnoye Predpryatye Rossiyskoye Agentsvo Mezhdunarodnoy Informatsii", I think.178.26.108.15 (talk) 16:19, 31 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Still operating? edit

This entire article is written in the past tense, yet using the English link at the bottom, I get redirected to http://en.ria.ru/ which appears to still be getting updated with news stories and bears the name "RIA Novosti" at the top. Are they still operating and the article's just out of date? RobinHood70 talk 18:54, 22 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

RobinHood70 is correct. The subject news service is still operating. It did not stop operating. --Dervorguilla (talk) 04:39, 4 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

You can't take out the fact that RIA Novosti was actually liquidated and replaced by Russia Today, just because the website is still in operation, under whatever leadership past or present, the fact the Putin liquidated RIA Novosti is still a true fact. 99.99.51.64 (talk) 17:01, 18 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

But it's still operating under the name RIA Novosti.--82.35.251.109 (talk) 15:58, 24 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
Well http://en.ria.ru/ now redirects to Sputnik International (http://sputniknews.com) so I think it is safe to say RIA is no longer operating in any sense. Alex McKee (talk) 11:46, 27 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
Russian language RIA Novosti [ria.ru] appears to be operating seperately, do not know why en.ria.ru redirects there. FlalfTalk 20:24, 6 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

RIA Novosti has been operating 6 years after it became 'defunct' edit

I haven't found much coverage and I don't know what to say except it is very apparent from their website [ria.ru] that they are obviously not defunct as they are still publishing articles. This article needs to be updated, will be tagging it with that as well. FlalfTalk 20:11, 6 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
