I have updated the introduction section. Can the added first paragraph provide sufficient context for those unfamiliar with the subject? If so, the "context" tag can be removed. --Yhuai (talk) 00:11, 17 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Horizontal/vertical reversed edit

The description uses "horizontally"/"horizontal" for "vertically"/"vertical" and vice versa, for example:

> The horizontal partitioning will first partition the table into multiple row groups based on the row-group size ...

The underlying cause seems to be confusing the orientation of the (virtual) dividing line for the actual dimension in which the division in done.

Note that dividing a vertical line into multiple segments would be vertical partitioning. Even if you drew horizontal lines to show where the vertical line is divided, that would not make it horizontal partitioning.

Since rows are divisions in the vertical direction, partitioning a set of rows into multiple groups of rows is vertical partitioning. (Just because the boundary between the rows in one group and the next is horizontal does not make it horizontal partitioning.) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.229.4.2 (talk) 16:05, 14 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
