I believe this occurs in several types of maple and several other species of wood. http://hobbithouseinc.com/personal/woodpics/_figureandgrainterms.htm#quilted

However, I am not an expert, and there seems to be wide variation in how basic words like curl, wavy, grain, quilting, etc. are defined from source to source.
