List of Teachers and Staff? edit

9081711jazz (talk · contribs) introduced a section List of Teachers and Staff with three names. The first, Roennfeldt, is already mentioned in the article; the third, O'Brien, is unsourced and unsupported by the Conservatorium's website [1] and [2]. An article on him was recently speedily deleted for WP:CSD#A7[3]. The second name, Denson, is a second-tier lecturer. Apart from the director (Roennfeldt), the article itself mentions the Associate Director, Schippers, who is not mentioned in this new list. Why the list consists of these three names is not clear. The list is also beset with formatting infelicities and contains some spelling oddities.

I think a list of teachers and staff below the level of Director is no business of Wikipedia and should be left to the institution's own website. For these reasons, I am going to revert 9081711jazz's last three edits.

Regarding Sam O'Brien: I'm more than happy to support an article on him if his notability can be established.

Queensland Conservatorium graduates edit

I am perplexed by the chronology implicit in the list of alumni. It says 'more recent students..include...Piers Lane etc'. This musician and others in this list actually predate the first list of alumni, so are not truly 'more recent' but 'former' students. May I suggest that this list is revised? Both the Gormleys were minor singers and both are out of the opera business and have been for a decade or two. A regular update of this alumni list would probably be appropriate. The phrase you object to was introduced in this edit on 24 June 2007. I agree that it doesn't make sense, and that all names with red links should be removed. As for a useful format of a list of alumni: I think it should be either in chronological order by date of graduation, or, if that is too hard, chronologically by date of birth, or if that is also too hard (I notice that there is no DoB for Jeffrey Black), simply alphabetically. I do believe that the alumni list should be revised but it raises a number of awkward questions which I don't know how to solve. Should the alumni list be a 'fame advertisement' for the institution? Or should it be a list of artists actually working in the industry professionally, whether famous or not? For example, in the Victorian College of the Arts page, there are a list of opera singers - all graduates from that institution, who are leading first rank artists in many opera houses all over the world. Very few Australians may know their names but does that mean that they are not worth listing, or that because they are not (or were not) famous in their own part of the Queensland diaspora, but rather that Australians know next to nothing of the achievements of their compatriots. This raises the questions of the Gormley sisters again. If these two beautiful singers are to be listed (and I assure you I have a lot of respect for them both having worked on stage with them individually) then other QCM graduates with longer careers and more international and national exposure should be listed too. Ultimately the list should reflect the true diversity of the Con and the gradual changes over the years of the graduates and their skills, but should not become a de-facto advertisement for the Con, and contain the names that it chooses to laud. I don't know the answer to your questions. Pragmatically, I think the list should include only those which have Wikipedia articles; that should by itself establish some proven level of notability. Michael Bednarek (talk) 02:02, 28 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
