Local street names edit

Locals refer to Cornmarket Street as simply Cornmarket; and to High Street as "The High". Similarly Turl Street is often referred to as The Turl, St. Aldates Street is usually just called "St. Aldates" (no apostrophe), and Broad Street is The Broad. Queen Street, however, is called Queen Street.

I don't know of another town where this kind of naming convention is extant, and I don't know how or when it arose. I assume it is ancient - it mainly applies to a few streets within the old city walls. With the exception of St. Clements Street, which is outside the old city walls; it is usually referred to as just "St. Clements". St. Giles Street, also outside the walls, is usually just called "St. Giles".
