Origin of depression

edit

The statement about salt weathering forming the depression is wrong. Even a cursory reading of the article should have lead no one to include this misinformation.

Last sentence: "In contrast, the eastern part of the depression (Fig. 6), where there is low salinity-groundwater table, salt weathering is not effective and the deflation process is relatively inhibited due to the high cohesion of moist sediment, a permanent vegetation cover and precipitation of halite cement between the wind-blown sandy sediment." — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:380:8640:54BC:88D0:5715:D17E:3C11 (talk) 21:49, 6 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

After reading the cited source, I've added that it was initiated during the late Neogene by either aeolian or fluvial processes, but that the current deflation (active during the Quaternary) is due to the salt weathering/aeolian processes described in the paper. I've removed the tag as it wasn't really contradictory, just incomplete. Mikenorton (talk) 10:13, 9 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Qattara Depression Project

edit

The four listed reasons for why the CIA thought this was a good idea were the same for over ten years on this page as well as the dedicated project page. Last summer, an anonymous changed three of the reasons on this page, adding two sources that appear to simply be image and word searches for the Qattara Depression in a Cyrillic search engine. The IP address these changes came from has since been blocked.

I would change the reasons back, but I can’t access the original declassified CIA document listed as the source so I don’t even know if those reasons are correct. I don’t know the protocol here. Charwood12 (talk) 17:03, 18 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
