Variants

I'm not sure why Le Truc or Speculation are included as variants. Put and Truc have similarities, but there is no evidence that Truc is a variant of Put and there are significant differences. For example, Truc is a four-hand partnership game that involves signalling and verbal communication between partners. Put is a predominantly two-hand individual game with no communication at all. It is never played in partnership. If anything, Put may be descended from Truc which is much older. And if we are going to describe it, Sid Sackson is hardly a trustworthy authority on a French regional game.

Speculation is nothing like Put. Differences include: the card ranking, the presence of trumps, exchanging with the trump upcard, buying and selling of hand cards, and no tricks.

My proposal is to change the section title to "Related games"; reword the section on Truc, pointing to the main article; remove the section on Speculation (which has its own article anyway); add brief sections on other games of the Put family recorded by McLeod at pagat.com (Aluette, Vitou and Truco). Earliest record

Although the lede quotes Parlett as saying this is a 16th century game, I can find no references earlier than the 17th century. If anyone knows of any earlier sources, let me know and we can amend or confirm this.Bermicourt (talk) 08:50, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
