Providence Gold BugsProvidence F.C. — There is insufficient evidence to support that this was the team's official name. Libro0 (talk) 00:56, 24 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Stock

edit

Organized in 1924. On March 10, 1929 the stock price for the team was reduced from $100 to $10 so that more followers would be able to subscribe to it. Libro0 (talk) 23:47, 9 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Article name

Libro0, I saw you mentioned this article at WP:CFDS. Is Providence F.C. the best name for the article? In 2010 you argued that there is insufficient evidence to support that this was the team's official name, but normally Wikipedia uses the WP:COMMONNAME. TSventon (talk) 16:27, 21 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Yes I have reviewed WP:COMMONNAME and if it was applied here it would still be Providence. If you take a season like 1929 for example, you will find Providence F.C.(official), Fletchermen(owner), Gold Bugs(uniform), and Clamdiggers(cultural). Providence F.C. was still the most common - as in every article. Gold Bugs maybe once, a few of the others. It also depends on the author/newspaper for what you will see more often. The problem with this article(and similar) is people defer to US soccer archives and RSSSF and just copy-pasted info over here. Consulting the authors of those sites reveals that they had their own methods for the sake of simplicity and they suggest you should do your own research to find the precise facts. Hence Providence FC not Fletchermen or Light Blues and so on. Libro0 (talk) 23:06, 21 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Libro0, thank you, I admit that I don't know much about this area. Are you saying that The Year in American Soccer is not a reliable source? TSventon (talk) 09:00, 22 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
It is a source that needs updating. Like wikipedia it is also a work in progress. So, no I certainly never cite the archive or RSSSF. In fact they get some of their information from here. Libro0 (talk) 22:53, 22 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Libro0, looking at the article references Soccer in a Football World by Dave Wangerin via Google books mentions Providence but not Clamdiggers or Goldbugs, which supports the current article title. Could you update the first sentence to begin Providence Football Club? The article could do with better references, but that would be a larger project. TSventon (talk) 08:35, 23 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
I have changed it. I am currently working other projects but this and other related articles are on my to do list. Libro0 (talk) 22:34, 23 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thank you, I can well believe it is easy to find hundreds of articles in equal need of fixing. TSventon (talk) 22:50, 23 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
