Scope?

edit

I would imagine that an article at this title would be focusing on planned acquisitions for the RAN, andor the process through which the RAN acquires new vessels/equipment/capabilities. At the moment, a lot of the text describes the current fleet; information that, while useful and should be somewhere on Wikipedia, is outside the scope of this article and should be relocated (if so, where?). Am I right in thinking this, or am I barking up the wrong tree?. -- saberwyn 07:57, 17 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Yes, the article should be changed to describe the planned changes to the RAN's equipment holdings (including planned modifications to ships, aircraft, etc). Nick-D (talk) 08:13, 17 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Proposal to move this article to 'Future of the Royal Australian Navy'.

edit

Moving the article would make it in line with the convention for naming similar articles, e.g. Future of the Royal Navy, Future of the Russian Navy. Keepcalmandchill (talk) 03:38, 27 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

New Hobart class destroyers replacements

edit

Comfirmation of the Hobart class destroyer replacements was announced in february's Surface Fleet review announced. At the Indo-pacific 2023 Defence show, BAE announced an increased armament design of the Hunter-class frigate to put to the government to fill the request for a guided-missile destroyer replacement 8,000-10,000 tonnes displacement. Also announced in Indo-Pacific 2023, Spainish company Navantia put forward a new "Flight III" guided-missile destroyer design, which is also within 8,000-10,000 tonnes displacement. Hence I've added these details to the page, aswell as other corrections.

Taking into consideration Navantia designed the current guided-missile destroyer Hobart class vessels, and BAE Systems are constructing Hunter-class vessels at the osborne shipyard where these replacement guided-missile destroyers will be built, it is well established in the Defence community that it will be either BAE systems or Navantia to design and build the replacements. I reverted your edit because you removed other edits that were unrelated to the Hobart class destroyer replace. Furthermore, I will add more citations. Luke848 (talk) 07:39, 13 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Those ship proposals are just that, proposals. The government hasn't announced its requirements for this project, much less begun a procurement process or selected a design or builder. Any design could be selected and any company could end up building the ships. Please don't re-add this speculation - please see WP:NOR. Nick-D (talk) 07:43, 13 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
I will re-add the Hobart-class replacements, but remove the specific details which aren't confirmed
Set facts that have been confirmed are:
- After the Hunter-class frigates are completed in 2043, construction will begin on Hobart-class destroyer replacements
- The replacements will be built at the Osborne Naval Shipyard
- The replacements will be built in conjuction with ASC Luke848 (talk) 07:47, 13 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
That doesn't seem correct. From checking the Surface Fleet review, the reviewers recommended that initial work begin on the Hobart class replacement project by 2027 (p. 8). The government has only agreed to this recommendation in principle (p. 15), with the government response noting that "The Government will consider the replacement program for the Hobart class destroyers in the context of the 2026 National Defence Strategy", so it is not correct to say that this is a confirmed part of the RAN's future. I seriously suggest watching the media announcement from the Defence Minister Hon. Richard Marles himself before making assuptions of your own. This is a primary source, and confirms my stated information surrounding the Hobart-class replacements. Cheers

Why have you re-added this cited to a source that doesn't support the material? You have also added a claim that there will be three of the replacement ships as well as a claim that they will be guided missile destroyers - what are the sources for this? Nick-D (talk) 08:47, 13 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Mate, what do you think 'replacement' means? It obviously means the current three are getting replaced with another three, potentially more at a later date, but that is up to a future government. And when the defence minister says "The replacement for the Hobart-class, the air-warfare destroyer, will also be built in Adelaide" what do you think he means? Replacing the air-warfare destroyer with a canoe? No, obviously the ship will be replaced with another, modern and advanced air-warfare destroyer design.
I'll delete the source which doesn't support the material, and replace it (no pun intended). Luke848 (talk) 13:46, 13 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
I'm not sure what you're hoping to achieve by being rude? This material seems again to be your speculation given your comment here, especially the lack of references. As the reliable sources note that initial scoping won't begin on this project for several years, I'll remove this. There are any number of examples of the ADF not replacing equipment like for like, even when there was an initial intention to do so. Nick-D (talk) 23:21, 13 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Alright, I'm happy with that. Luke848 (talk) 23:31, 13 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
