Is 'Primary School' the preferred term in the UK?
editI'm not sure it is the preferred term in the UK? I'd say its more commonly referred to as 'junior school'. Mtaylor848 (talk) 18:16, 24 December 2014 (UTC)
- Junior schools and infant schools are types of primary schools. We call these schools primary schools whereas in the US they call them elementary schools.Dahliarose (talk) 22:55, 24 December 2014 (UTC)
- In England primary school and junior school are different. Primary is for 5-11 year-olds, infant is for 5-8 year-olds. Junior is for 8-11 year-olds. It is not unusual for one site to accommodate (in a primary school) buildings for both infants and juniors. Wiwal, there was an optional reception class (rarely reception 'school') for 4-5 year-olds, it would be in the same building as the infant school. 109.158.6.169 (talk) 14:55, 27 June 2020 (UTC)
At least in Scotland there doesn't appear to be any Junior schools at all Eastwood Park and strabane (talk) 21:56, 7 January 2020 (UTC)
"About five to twelve"?
editIs this the correct age range? Slightly different age groups in different parts of the world, occasional variances from one school to the next. The general rule seems to be about 4-6 to 10-12 years old.Llewee (talk) 00:04, 15 December 2019 (UTC)
"junior school"
editWe don't commonly use "junior school" in Australia to refer to "primary school". Maybe some private schools, but we generally just call them "primary schools" like Irish and British do. Tooironic (talk) 10:17, 15 December 2020 (UTC)
- Can of worms this one. My grandkids go to school in Nottingham in a building designed in the 1870s, as did I in Manchester (1950s), and most of neighbourhood in Medway (2020s). They were either built as separate infant schools (5-7} and junior schools (7-11), or combined infant junior primary schools. In the interim, schools have been reorganised through first/middle/upper and back again, but still on the stonework we see carved Infant School, Junior School. It is varies according to location in the UK, its political colour, and the presence of church in that locality as well--- ClemRutter (talk) 11:09, 15 December 2020 (UTC)
