Quorum number edit

could someone list the section and verse of the Doctrine & Covenants where the 48 members per priest's quorum is noted. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.117.4.55 (talk) 02:42, 2 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Added: DC 107:87, though it only says it by implication. Good Ol’factory (talk) 02:48, 2 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Article rename edit

Since all of the existing content of this article is specific to the LDS Church, shouldn't we just change the name to Priest (LDS Church)? Without that we do need that obnoxious section heading specifying LDS Church material. On the other hand I'd be just as open to have info about the office of a priest in the Community of Christ & The Church of Jesus Christ (Bickertonite) added to this article and keep the existing name. -- 208.81.184.4 (talk) 00:41, 11 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Added some really basic info on CoC & CoJC(B), but it needs work. -- 208.81.184.4 (talk) 15:55, 11 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Confusing edit

This article says "Males who reach the age of 16 are integrated into the Priests. "

But Aaronic priesthood says the " Aaronic priesthood is open only to men and boys, twelve years old or older, who are considered worthy.....".

It is difficult to know what that means. If it is saying 12 year old can enter the priesthood but not become priests until they turn 16, then it should be explained that way. Bit confusing as it is. Moriori (talk) 00:58, 11 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

In the LDS Church there are two priesthoods: the Aaronic priesthood, and the Melchizedek priesthood. Within each of these priesthoods there are specific offices (consider these like roles), which are organized into quorums. The offices of the Aaronic priesthood are: deacon, teacher, priest, and bishop. There is a good chart at in the Aaronic priesthood#Role within LDS practice section that breaks down the requirements to be ordained to each office. -- 208.81.184.4 (talk) 15:53, 11 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
Ok, so why the differences as noted below
Priest (Latter Day Saints) -- "Priest is a priesthood office in the Aaronic Priesthood..........Males who reach the age of 16 are integrated into the Priests. "
Aaronic priesthood -- " Aaronic priesthood is open only to men and boys, twelve years old or older, who are considered worthy....."
The first quote is contradicted by the second . Moriori (talk) 21:16, 11 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
Not at all: the first office of the Aaronic Priesthood is that of Deacon, who must be at least 12 yrs or older; the next office is of Teacher, who must be at least 14 years old; and the office of Priest requires a male to be at least 16 yrs old. Each of these are considered steppingstones to the next. Again please see the chart at Aaronic priesthood#Role within LDS practice.
A completely irreligious loose analogy is the modern US Army Army enlisted rank system. Enlisted ranks start with the Privates (which for this analogy I'll lump together), then the Corporals, and then the Sergeants (again lumping together). Normally enlisted personnel start out as a Private, then after a term of service they gain the experience needed to become a Corporal. Again after serving as a Corporal they can become a Sergeant. As far as age goes, the Privates are generally the youngest people in the enlisted ranks, and the Sergeants are the oldest (excepting reductions in rank, which is where the analogy starts breaking down). -- 208.81.184.4 (talk) 23:14, 11 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
User talk:208.81.184.4 is correct. I think (but I admit I may be wrong) part of the confusion is due to the difference in definitions between the "Priesthood” in the Catholic Church (and most other religions) and the "Priesthood” in the LDS Church.
Within the Catholic Church if you are within the "Priesthood" you are a "Priest" since the "Priesthood" is "The ministerial orders of the Catholic Church". In other words all bishops, deacons, etc, with the Catholic Church are within the "Priesthood", and are "Priests". The two are directly connected.
However, within the LDS Church the "Priesthood" is not the ministerial orders. The LDS Chruch has no ministerial order in the way. The "Priesthood" is "the power and authority to act in the name of God for the salvation of humankind." and is seperate from being a "Priests". Bishop, deacon, etc. are within the "Priesthood", but are not "Priests". The only connection between being a "Priest" and the "Priesthood" is that to be a "Priest" you must hold the "Priesthood" (have "the power and authority ...". So you can be ages 12-15, have the "Aaronic priesthood", be a deacon or teacher, but not be a "Priest". Additionally, when you move into being an Elder (usually around 19, but that depends on a number of things), or become a Bishop, etc, you still hold the "priesthood" (Melchizedek), but you again are no longer a "Priest".--ARTEST4ECHO (talk/contribs) 18:57, 15 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

So did this answer the question? -- 208.81.184.4 (talk) 17:39, 22 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Religious texts template edit

The religious texts template is meant for situations in which religious texts are used as sources for disputed claims; for example, if we used LDS scriptures to argue that King Benjamin existed. Here, the religious texts are only being used as sources about the beliefs of those who hold to them: I can't imagine someone arguing that the Doctrines and Covenants is anything except a highly reliable source for specific teachings of the LDS Church. We don't need secondary sources to tell us what the LDS scriptures say are the duties of priests. Nyttend (talk) 04:18, 13 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
