I'm a bit confused by the statement "Sir J.G.Bremer took possession of the mainland on 20 September 1824 and founded the short-lived colony". Later in the section, it states that the settlement was founded in 1838, and this is in accord with the sources I have to hand, including G.S. Ritchie's very useful The Admiralty Chart (1967), which I will add to the reference list. Any clues as to what happened in 1824 would be appreciated. Kognos (talk) 12:18, 24 March 2020 (UTC)
- I can see a snippet of Alexander Wyclif Reed's 1973 book Place Names of Australia at Google books, p. 179: "Port Essington NT – Discovered on 17 April 181 by P. P. King, and named by him 'as a tribute of my respect for the memory of my lamented friend, Vice-Admiral Sir William Essington'. Sir J. G. Bremer took possession of the mainland on 20 September 1824, ..." Not much to go on, but the text in the article is (almost) correctly cited. -- Michael Bednarek (talk) 12:58, 24 March 2020 (UTC)

Victoria was the name of the settlement .... Port Essington is a rather large body of water. Thinking of proposing a rename. Reactions?? Ariconte (talk) 01:01, 28 July 2022 (UTC)
