Institutions / Population

We really need to do the math .......

The lede states "... Polish Americans now made up 6.7% of Chicago's population, and numbered at 182,064."

(Chicago's population is 2,746,388 and 6.7% of that is 184,007 ... that editor clearly did their homework and provided a citation!)

In the Institutions section, it says "Chicago bills itself as the largest Polish city outside of Poland with approximately 1,900,000 people of Polish ancestry in the Chicago metropolitan area."

(The Chicago metro are has a population of 9,441,957, so 6.7% of that would be no more than 632,611 even if the Polish density was the same outside of the city.)

An editor changed 1,100,000 to 1,900,000 a while ago (with no citation), which is clearly incorrect based upon government data. I can't tell if they intended to change it to 900,000 but left the leading 1, ... or intended to change it to 1,900,000. That same year, 29.9% of the nation’s Polish immigrants were in Chicago. A total of 1.9 million Polish-Americans call Chicago and its suburbs home. It’s no wonder that Chicago calls itself the largest Polish city in the world, outside of Poland itself."

There you have both figures: 1,900,000 in Chicago metro, and 875,652 in the entire state of Illinois. Clearly not correct.

My point is that editors should only use reputable, cite-able figures in articles, preferably from govt census sources. Don't do the math yourself unless you are very confident that you understand the units and criteria for what is being counted. Current county data from US Census: Cook: 411,369 DuPage: 107,269 Will: 83,726 Lake: 58,343 McHenry: 42,068 McKane: 41,459 Total:744,234 I'm going to change it to "approximately 800,000" and cite https://www.census.gov/library/visualizations/interactive/detailed-race-ethnicities-2020-census.html  • Bobsd •  (talk) 19:47, 28 November 2023 (UTC)
