An anon keeps adding this table to the Electric Soldier Porygon section. I'm having trouble figuring out what purpose it serves; the text already says that Pokémon was put on hiatus after Electric Soldier Porygon, and this table just reiterates that. O.k the only reason why I added that is because I wanted to show how the seizure episode effected the original airing of the different episodes that was supposed to air after “Electric Soldier Porygon----Denno Senshi Porigon’ if we don’t need it I will be ok with it. I covered that, in rewriting the article. The series went on hiatus for four months, and it now says that.

"Holiday Hi-Jinx" controversy?

Why was Jynx's appearance in this episode "controversial"? This portion of the article is ambiguous.

The episode isn't controversial; Jynx is. Jynx's black-skinned design looked a lot like a minstrel performer in blackface, and the negative racial connotations generated controversy.

The Legend of Dratini

I find it interesting that The Legend of Dratini was not dubbed and aired in the US (and other countries that have the US dubbing, like the UK) because of guns being pointed at people. Do you remember episode 12, Here Comes the Squirtle Squad, where Ash runs to a town to get some medicine from a store? When he entered, many people aimed shotguns at him. I wonder why this was acceptible to 4Kids, and the Dratini episode wasn't. And that's not even bringing up the Elmer Fudd arguement. --Daniel Lawrence 13:50, 9 September 2005 (UTC)

Simpsons

I'm almost positive that the simpsons weren't spoofing that incident with Pokemon particuarly, they were spoofing almost all japanese shows. Because most of them can cause seizures. Also, sometimes, the picture won't even load.

Actually, no, they really can't, not any more than American animation or any TV show, for that matter.

It's doubtful; Electric Soldier Porygon hasn't ever been localized for English. As for Shaking Island Battle, I don't know, as the US episodes haven't gotten that far, but I sort of doubt it, since it wasn't even aired in Japan. - A Man In Black (Talk | Contribs) 06:51, 20 September 2005 (UTC)

Title of EP038

でんのうせんしポリゴン dennō senshi Porygon is more accurately translated as Computer soldier Porygon. The more common [mis]translation probably came about because someone misread it as でんのせんしポリゴン den-no senshi Porygon. The use of occasionally translated belittles the accuracy of this translation. Granted, 電脳 dennō is not a commonly used word for computer in Japanese (it is in Chinese, except, apparently, in China, where they prefer 计算机 - counting-machine - or so I'm told), but it's clear enough what it means - an electronic brain is a computer. - 振霖_T 08:45, 2 October 2005 (UTC)

Didn't the attack 'Thunderbolt' in the Green verison have similarities to the seizure episodes??

Porygon note

Took the liberty of adding a small note about how Porygon appeared in a "Who's That Pokémon?" bit. I personally found this particularly unusual, given it will likely never appear in an episode of the animé ever again and certainly has never done so in any language other than Japanese. Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Porygon appear in one of the parts linking scenes together in either a later episode or "Pikachu's Vacation"? Would that be worthy of note? --L T Dangerous

Regarding the new public service on-screen advisories, the warning shown for Inu Yasha at the bottom of Electric Soldier Porygon has been amended to read "A request from Inu Yasha [a main character from a popular anime series of the same name]... " Given that the very next line explains that this is "(as seen on Nippon TV broadcasts of InuYasha)", I suggest we either delete the explanation in square brackets, or make it a wikilink. flashing

In a couple of episodes, like the one with the surfing and the big wave, I noticed the screen went pale and odd, sometimes when there were electric attacks. Were these added in place of flashing?14:02, 16 December 2005 (UTC)

Most likely these were edits made to episodes that were already at some stage of cel drawing in the production cycle, if not already in the can. Given that it takes even Japanese animators several months to complete a 25-minute episode, and that Pokémon is necessarily done in an assembly-line fashion as it has run every week since April 1998, a new animation style wouldn't show up for several episodes after the break, but some adjustments would still have to have been made to adapt to their new requirements. Thus, the producers went with the most expedient way of dealing with the situation, and re-animated or re-exposed some sequences. This required some time, so they were given a hiatus and brought back at the beginning of the next TV season in April 1998. SWalkerTTU 04:53, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

As for your last question, it's not that Jynx is purple, it's that her face is black with big lips, which makes Jynx look a lot like blackface. Blackface is racist, so it's offensive to some/many/most (?) people. --AySz88^-^ 04:26, 4 February 2006 (UTC)

Donfwan - or more accurately Donfan - is the Japanese name for the Pokémon Donphan. The title refers to the fact that it is the Donphan mating season. Sonic Mew 17:57, 26 February 2006 (UTC)

Smoochum and the Three Jynx Sisters

Does this really belong in the article? Wikipedia is not a crystal ball. An episode that hasn't even aired in Japan yet and is almost a year away from its probable air date in the United States doesn't really need to be mentioned. Yes, title makes it obvious that Jynx will be featured, and apparently changing its skin to purple isn't enough to satisfy Kids WB. But given that Kids WB will have been replaced by The CW Network's children's block before the US dub of Pokemon gets to this episode, there's not enough certainty of this episode being pulled to justify including it in this article. Just because it hasn't had a chance to be banned doesn't mean it won't be. I believe the changeover to Kids' CW would likely be a change in name only, not a change in personnel or in programming policy, as UPN no longer has a children's block. UPN dropped kids' programming in 2003, and hasn't programmed a kids' block since 1999, when Disney took over UPN Kids. The CW is essentially a merger of UPN and The WB...probably about 20/80 programming-wise, and 0/100 on children's programming, so I wouldn't expect major changes, especially in the choice of what goes out. I found the tone of this article to be just fine. It might lack the stiffness of a typical encyclopedia, but it's fluid and very readable. These are pokemon we're talking about, and so I think some deviation from the standard tone is to be expected, and frankly, welcome. The site http://www.csicop.org/si/2001-05/pokemon.html Discusses the seizure-inducing explosion. My read of the artical seems to state that it dident happen the way the massmedia imples.

"Electric Soldier Porygon" (sometimes called "Computer Soldier Porygon") was banned worldwide because of a scene roughly twenty minutes in the episode had flashing red/blue screens multiple times over six seconds (the final two second being in full screen). Numerous people had seizures because of this, thus making that episode banned worldwide. There are videos on YouTube, albeit slowed down, that show that certain part of the episode. The incident itself is about 27 seconds long. "Holiday Hi-Jynx" was banned because the character Jynx had a black face and big red lips, which looked like "blackface" (make-up), which is racist, thus forcing this episode to be banned as well. Jynx appeared another time, though with a purple face.

Adding to that...a scene in 'Beauty and the Beach' was banned because it showed James portraying and inflatable swimsuit if you know what I mean. Spottedstripe 12:41, 29 April 2007 (UTC)

Though, there aren't usually any scenes cut other than the occasional seconds here and there. There's certain exceptions - such as the prologue to Pokémon Heroes - but they would fit better in the relevant articles rather than here. --Sonic Mew 14:03, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

Dratini episode - Banned everywhere?

I'm fairly certain I saw the Dratini episode before (I mostly remember the scene when he captures the 30 Tauros, as well as recalling them being used later in the tournament).I live in Quebec, Pokemon episodes are dubbed in French, but this at least proves that this one wasn't banned everywhere outside of Asia.

The Legend of Dratini - Aired in the US?

I remember seeing the very end of 'The Legend of Dratini' when I was younger. I was flipping channels, not knowing about the 'lost episodes' being aired, and found WB. I saw something about lost episodes, then ash in front of... I think he was in front of a house with a brown roof, but note this was over 6 years ago. there was a Dratini somewhere in there, and I think I saw a Tauros. I know that this is really open to interpretation here, and that it isn't a reliable source, but when I saw the 'rumored to have been aired', it just jumped to my mind and I just HAD to mention it. I removed " That's actually not true, I live in the United Kingdom and i've seen that episode several times on Sky One" from the article. Encyclopedia's shouldn't speak in the first person. If someone can verify the extent to which the episode was or was not banned in the UK, then the segment can be edited. Maybe, the United Kingdom should just be taken out of the list of countries.

Pokemon and Turkey

However, this article discusses specific episodes that are banned from being broadcast in various countries for whatever reason there is. "Banned" is misleading and needs changing, but I don't think "Controversial" is quite right, many episodes may be controversial but not have been removed from the schedules. What this article describes is episodes that have been removed from episode rotations, usually for cultural or social sensibilities, rather than official sanctions. How about List of Pokémon episodes removed from episode rotations? It's accurate, but not very snappy. Can anyone improve? LukeSurl 23:52, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

Tentacool and Tentacruel

The Tentacruel page says that the Tentacool and Tentacruel episode was banned temporarily, but it isn't listed on the main page as such. 67.42.33.182 03:42, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

It was taken out of the American circulation after the 9/11 attacks, because of a giant tentacruel destroying a bulding. But the episode had aired numerous times before and has since been seen in reruns. (Animedude 01:38, 26 April 2007 (UTC))

Remove Gun picture

Also, what is so wrong about something that was actually in an episode of Pokemon? Oh, the gun was. Maybe some thirteen year olds in America might find it "scary", so lets not air the episode.

Unbanned?

Is it likely the FCC will unban the episodes of pokemon? and are these episodes on DVD or VHS? I have seen the dangerest episode on youtube but it was slow for safety reasons! Now i wana see it!--AnimeXFL 16:40, 13 June 2007 (UTC)

Do not erase my warning!

I just added a link to a Youtube page that has Electric Solider Porygon in 9 parts. My link includes a warning for those prone to seizures to not go on the page. Do not take away the warning. I feel it's important since one of the videos said that the poster had a headache while watching the scene in question. Thank you for respecting my wishes.

Was Columbine Entirely Responsible?

Based on US airing dates from Bulbapedia, The Legend Of Dratini should have aired in the US in '98, but Columbine wasn't until '99. So, was there some other reason why it wasn't aired? Megatronacepticon (talk) 10:28, 13 January 2008 (UTC)

Miniryu no Densetsu dub

There's two contradictory claims made about this episode: that an English-language dub was made but nor aired (other than in Australia), and that a script was prepared but recording of the audio never took place. Both can't be true. Can someone come up with a reference that supports one or the other version? Gusworld (talk) 15:19, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

I see that the claim about Australian TV has been removed for lacking a source -- well and good -- but there's still a contradiction re whether the episode dub was done or not. Unless someone can provide a direction citation for the Maddie Blaustein claim, it should be removed. We also need citable evidence for whether the dub really exists. As there's been no response, I'm going to remove both claims (#1 that a dub was produced never broadcast, #2 that Maddie Blaustein said a dub was scripted but not recorded). Question.

Both Holiday Hi-Jynx and The Ice Cave have Jynx with that color, so why was The Ice Cave banned and Holiday Hi-Jynx not? Did that blackface thing happen sometime after Holiday Hi-Jynx was dubbed and aired? (Quote: It was the first widespread ban of a Pokémon episode in four years.) If I'm remembering correctly, the issue around Jynx only came to light after Holiday Hi-Jynx aired; my memory on this is fuzzy, but I think it was the actual episode itself that started the controversy. MelicansMatkin (talk) 02:40, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

I hope they unban those episodes. =( Just put a warning on the Porygon one in English. On the gun one in English, well, leave it as is because they don't even have blood showing or anything. For Beauty and the Beach, show the uncut version in English. I mean, it's for humor. It's stupid that they banned it just because of that. Last, but not least, The Ice Cave. Unban that and dub it into English.
