Pokewalker?
The Pokemon Go Plus sounds pretty similar to the Pokewalker in that they're both accessories for Pokemon games that interact with real life. Anyone seeing any mention of this in an RS? Supernerd11 Firemind ^_^ Pokedex 01:10, 1 October 2015 (UTC)
- I haven't heard anything about the plus being a pedometer, it's more alike to a bluetooth headset; instead of an audio in/output, it's a simple notification tool like a gutted healthband wearable, though. 79.212.232.87 (talk) 07:01, 6 February 2016 (UTC)

Augmented Reality
This and ingress is as much augmented reality as google maps. I simply do not perceive a game thats merely GPS enabled as augmenting any reality. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.172.230.201 (talk) 16:04, 7 November 2015 (UTC)
- I agree in principle that it is merely GPS enabled, but there are a lot of WP:RS that refer to both Ingress and Pokémon GO as augmented reality. 166.20.224.13 (talk) 14:53, 25 November 2015 (UTC)
- (same as first) Those RS just stick to the naming the google developers chose themself. 79.212.225.150 (talk) 11:54, 11 December 2015 (UTC)
- (again, topic starter) it seems it is really augmented reality, as some youtube videos show the game being able to use device sensors to overlay pokemon graphics on the camera feed. 87.172.233.151 (talk) 14:30, 8 May 2016 (UTC)
US/EU Release Dates
The article says the game was released today (the 6th) in Australia, America, and Europe. The game was only released in Australia on the 6th. The release date for the US and EU are to be announced. The release in Australia was a silent release, too, and it was not released in Japan, suggesting it wasn't supposed to go live quite yet. Me, Hurray! (talk) 13:59, 6 July 2016 (UTC)
- That's possibly my fault. Sorry. Not familiar that we split the release date into countries. Thanks for the improvement and sorry again. --CoolCanuck eh? 18:34, 6 July 2016 (UTC)
The introductory portion says the game was released worldwide in July 2016. As of 15 July, it is still no available everywhere, e.g., not in Sweden, neither on iOS nor Android.NiVeMa (talk) 07:20, 15 July 2016 (UTC)
- Worldwide for games doesn't actually mean every single country, I mean, should we consider Swaziland and Kuwait as regions too? Besides, Niantic already announced that more regions will have the game by the end of the month, and EU is a generalized regions, see the note in the infobox. ~ Dissident93 (talk) 07:23, 15 July 2016 (UTC)
release date for NA and EU should say 2016 instead of TBD
the Pokemon go page on the official Pokemon website reports the release date of Pokemon go as 2016 [1] there is a bit of misinformation floating around because of the (possibly accidental) release in NZ

Requesting that "The game was officially released in the United States, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan on July 6, 2016." have "and Japan" removed from the Development section, as well as from the Release Date section. The game has yet to be released in Japan. As can be seen on the official website[1]. For those unable to understand Japanese, the site states "配信開始日:2016年予定" which translates to "Release Date: 2016 [expectation]." Relying on English-centered news articles such as Eurogamer's US news editor for this information seems a bit foolish, considering the country we are looking at.

The Go Plus is designed to allow a more "heads-up" gaming experience than Ingress. The player can be alerted to a nearby Pokémon by the Go Plus vibrating, press its button in a coded sequence to capture the Pokémon and check the app later to find out what they've captured.[1]

It’s a nice way to take a step in the mobile ecosystem for them. That came out of two influences. One was a learning from Ingress. We wanted to give people a way to play the game where you didn’t necessarily have to take your phone out and interact with the UX. Part of the idea of the game is, you’re outside and you can see beautiful things. If you’re always staring at your phone, you’re not seeing the world around you.
We had brainstormed this idea. Why not have a little device that buzzes when you’re near something important? You can interact with it in some subtle way, and then later on you can open up your app or your tablet and you see, “Oh, I got this or did that.” That was one of the influences.
The other was, imagine that a parent is playing with a kid and they want to give the kid a device to interact with rather than handing over the phone. I’m often handing my phone to my kid, because he’s bored or whatever. But the idea is you can give them the Pokémon Go Plus device. It vibrates and flashes when you’re near Pokémon. When they press a button in a certain sequence they capture it. Then, later on, you can look at it together on your phone or tablet.
That quote supports the assertion that the Go Plus was made to create a more heads-up gaming experience than Ingress, and it supports the description of how the Go Plus will work. I hope this helps. --211.30.17.74 (talk) 00:23, 10 July 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks. It doesn't directly compare it to Ingress, so it's debatable. While they are talking about "learning from Ingress" .. I'm not sure. I would not object to an editor removing the citation needed, though. I'm just not 100% sure they meant that. Thanks! P.S. - I've removed the "not in source" tag for The player cannot check what they've caught until it is connected to a mobile device or a tablet but I've left the citation needed for the heads-up bit. Anarchyte (work | talk) 01:30, 10 July 2016 (UTC)

- Thanks @Anarchyte:. The heads-up text was my way of summarising " One was a learning from Ingress. Part of the idea of the game is, you’re outside and you can see beautiful things. If you’re always staring at your phone, you’re not seeing the world around you." Change the reference to choosing an avatar's 'gender' to choosing an avatar's 'style'. This is the term used in the game and is likely a deliberate decision to allow players to choose a masculine or feminine looking avatar regardless of the player's/avatar's gender.

This article is missing information regarding release dates outside the US/NZ/AU. If none have been announced, then we should say so. Revise the paragraph describing the origin of the game to include following facts.
The idea for the game was a proposal created by Niantic and pitched to The Pokemon Company (including TPC CEO Mr. Ishihara) by members of the Ingress development team, drawing heavily on game design elements, data, and technology from that project. Mr. Nomura was later invited to join that team and served as the Product Manager.

These are all wiki entries with each point documented and referenced. This is the basis for the current controversy over the potential CIA ties to the Pokemon Go application/game. The CIA is documented, on wiki and cited appropriately, as selling shares of Keyhole to Google, John Hanke left and started Niantic. A quick search of "pokemon go cia" on facebook will populate with thousands and thousands of posts discussing the connection a quick Google search for 'pokemon go cia' brings up several results in the 'news' category as well as 'About 6,290,000 results (0.78 seconds)'. It has been mentioned on twit.tv podcasts, several YouTube channels of various subscribers levels etc this also classified it as a 'controversy'. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 12.31.21.15 (talk) 19:48, 13 July 2016 (UTC)

John Hanke is an entrepreneur. He currently runs Niantic Labs, a company which explores experimental mobile, social, and local applications such as Ingress and 'Pokémon Go'. Prior to joining Google, Hanke founded and was CEO at Keyhole, Inc.. Police warning removed?
Why was the point about police warning users to look up and away from their phone when playing removed?.. multiple police agencies have issued similar warnings - even in countries that don't officially have the game.. and we're going to exclude them.. why? NPOV means neutral. Not only positive. --CoolCanuck eh? 15:04, 13 July 2016 (UTC)
- @CoolCanuck: Because it was not covered by reliable secondary sources, there was only a primary source from a Facebook account that's not even verified. We don't need to tell readers of common sense like that, see WP:NODISCLAIMERS. – nyuszika7h (talk) 15:31, 13 July 2016 (UTC)

- @CoolCanuck: - the point of the NT police's communication was lost in the wikipedia article. The Darwin Police Station became a pilgrimage point for a Sandshrew and pokeballs, and so they had to remind people that they didn't actually have to enter the station to try to catch it. They coupled this with a reminder to play safe. --211.30.17.74 (talk) 22:56, 13 July 2016 (UTC)

Reception ideas
I've started to expand the reception section and I have a few ideas for others if they wish to help:
- Talk about the battery problems.
- More overall coverage on the gameplay aspects. This includes both positive and negative press. See the second paragraph in the section for where this should be added. (Check out Metacritic for more reviews)
- Spotify sentence could be expanded. Why did it jump in popularity? What songs were influenced the most? etc.
- More notable websites have talked about the exercise benefits of this game. Maybe go into more detail?
- That reception table needs an expansion. It's recommended to not put review scores into the prose if that template is there, so may as well make use of it.
Hope this helps. Anarchyte (work | talk) 12:19, 14 July 2016 (UTC)
- About the Spotify sentence, I wanted to keep it simple, but the source does give more details. And about the review numbers in the prose, that's fine, the prose only really needs the general opinion of the reviewer. I can try and find more reviews if needed. ~ Dissident93 (talk) 12:40, 14 July 2016 (UTC)
New "Impact" section within the Reception section
I propose that there should be a new section relating to the positive impact that the game has overall. For example, CNN reported that a suspect was caught as a result of two marines playing the game. Furthermore, Wall Street Journal recently reported that Companies are marketing themselves by using the Pokémon Go app. Yoshiman6464 (talk) 18:42, 13 July 2016 (UTC)
- I'm not against this, but normally we go with "Legacy" for those types of sections on game articles. ~ Dissident93 (talk) 10:29, 14 July 2016 (UTC)

2013 Princeton Study
Regarding this edit. I stand by the opinion that it's totally off topic. Wikilink to mental health and exercise and let interested readers look at the main article.
- The rest of the references in this paragraph actually seem to be about the game.
- There seems to be no obvious reason why this particular study is chosen at random as a place filler for an entire field of neuroscience. Maybe there would be a better argument if it were actually study on exercise and mental health related to video games (maybe DDR?).
- The study itself is a particularly bad one for what it's trying to be shoehorned into. It's a study of mice, the mice are "runner" mice put in cold water, and it's a highly technical analysis of neurochemistry that basically no readers are going to understand. It's an analysis of mechanism and not cause/effect, and the study itself says in its conclusions that there is an issue with similar studies finding contradictory effects: that runner mice actually exhibit increased stress.
- It doesn't support the content anyway. It's not a meta analysis so it's not "studies". And it's juxtaposed to the following sentence which is specifically about augmented reality games, which this study is not about...in spades. TimothyJosephWood 19:11, 14 July 2016 (UTC)
- Pinging @Cyclonebiskit:. TimothyJosephWood 19:12, 14 July 2016 (UTC)
- @Timothyjosephwood: The direct reference to the study is provided on top of its mention within another reference used in the section. I'm simply cutting out the middle man and providing a direct link to it. The citation to the study can be removed if that's the problem, but the sentence itself is supported by multiple reliable sources. ~ Cyclonebiskit (chat) 19:16, 14 July 2016 (UTC)
- I'd be fine with including the quote from the article actually about the game. Attributed to Ben Michaelis:
"being outside, exercise and highly focused, goal-oriented activities have all been shown to help reduce some of the symptoms associated with anxiety and depression as well as other mental illnesses. I think that this feedback holds promise for other game makers to take note about possible benefits of their games."
- To take some sources that call this a form of exercise, and then use scholarly research on exercise per se to therefore say that there is scientific support that this game will have a definite beneficial outcome feels very WP:SYNTH. We cannot say in WP's voice that this game will have positive mental or physical health outcomes, which is what the current wording strongly implies. We can say that other people have said it will, which is what everything in the paragraph besides this sentence says. TimothyJosephWood 19:34, 14 July 2016 (UTC)
- Ahh, now I see where you're coming from and what the issue is. Yeah, I certainly did not intend for it to come off that way. My intention was to inform readers that exercise is known, and confirmed, to improve mental health but not make the connection directly to the game and violate WP:SYNTH. ~ Cyclonebiskit (chat) 19:51, 14 July 2016 (UTC)
- I probably should have thought my reasoning through more originally, instead of throwing WP:COAT out as the first thing that came to mind. TimothyJosephWood 19:57, 14 July 2016 (UTC)
- No worries, that's what discussions are for ~ Cyclonebiskit (chat) 19:59, 14 July 2016 (UTC)

- The game did drop without any warning so there was no build up to it for there to be many page views prior to release (but after the initial announcement last year). ~ Cyclonebiskit (chat) 03:04, 15 July 2016 (UTC)
- Which still kind of proves the point in that there was very little hype before the game was released (compare this instead to Overwatch), but exploded in popularity once it did last week. To go from 5 views a day to 800,000 in pretty much a month might be something Wikipedia has never seen, or least, very rarely. ~ Dissident93 (talk) 03:11, 15 July 2016 (UTC)

Please add information about City Spirit Go, a Chinese clone of Pokemon Go, to the article.
In China, Google services are banned by the Great Firewall. Players of Pokemon GO in China have bought IDs for the Australian Apple Store, used a virtual private network to use Google services, and used a GPS spoofer because there are no Pokemon to catch in China. A clone app called "City Spirit Go" is available in China, and was released shortly after Pokemon GO's beta test in Japan.[1]

technical issues
Pokemon Go never had access to drive/gmail/calendar/etc; was a display bug. The quote is taken out of context too.
We recently discovered that the Pokémon GO account creation process on iOS erroneously requests full access permission for the user’s Google account. However, Pokémon GO only accesses basic Google profile information (specifically, your User ID and email address) and no other Google account information is or has been accessed or collected. Once we became aware of this error, we began working on a client-side fix to request permission for only basic Google profile information, in line with the data that we actually access. Google has verified that no other information has been received or accessed by Pokémon GO or Niantic. Google will soon reduce Pokémon GO’s permission to only the basic profile data that Pokémon GO needs, and users do not need to take any actions themselves.

Per Google Play Store (Link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nianticlabs.pokemongo&hl=en) where it says: "Offered by Niantic, Inc." and iTunes App Store (Link: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pokemon-go/id1094591345?mt=8) where it says "Seller: Niantic, Inc. it seems like the Publisher should be Niantic. Can you please make this correction and link the Niantic, Inc. Wikipedia page (Link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niantic,_Inc.)?
Just wanted to ensure the proper company got the publisher credit. :)
Thanks!

- @PokemonFan12: Not done Niantic is the developer and due to The Pokémon Company being in charge of managing and licensing the Pokémon brand, they are the publisher. It seems this topic is highly debated, so I'll start a new thread to try to gain consensus on what the article should list as the publisher. See #Who's the publisher?. Purpose of PokéStops and Pokémon gyms?
What is the function of these locations? The article mentions them but does not explain what they are or why they are needed in the game.67.186.224.245 (talk) 11:58, 18 July 2016 (UTC)
- I've added a basic description of both of them. ~ Cyclonebiskit (chat) 12:34, 18 July 2016 (UTC)
- I expanded it a tad, too. Anarchyte (work | talk) 12:50, 18 July 2016 (UTC)
Street Ad
Why have we changed the previous color pic if the pub sign on the street to a black and white one? This isn't Instagram. We shouldn't prefer b/w or (heaven forbid) sepia images over color because we think they look cool. TimothyJosephWood 13:20, 18 July 2016 (UTC)
- It was always in black and white, that's how it was shared on flickr with a viable license. ~ Cyclonebiskit (chat) 13:23, 18 July 2016 (UTC)
- This one was linked to above. I thought it was previously on the article but I don't see a diff of it. TimothyJosephWood 13:54, 18 July 2016 (UTC)
- I didn't upload that one since it's of lower quality than the one presently in the article. Although it's in black and white, it's a lot clearer and easier to read. ~ Cyclonebiskit (chat) 14:25, 18 July 2016 (UTC)
- Fair enough. TimothyJosephWood 14:36, 18 July 2016 (UTC)
