Managing under Mccauley

I totally disagree with the comment that "Throughout the 1990s, under chairman Dan McCauley, Argyle had a string of managers. Peter Shilton, Neil Warnock and Mick Jones all managed the club, with mixed success." I remember this decade as being resolutely unsuccesful

Why have the external links been pared down to just three? People have commented on what a good resource this page is for PAFC and should be able to know about the wealth of additional internet sites available.

Arrested player

anyone know who the player recently arrested for fighting was? the police only named him as 'a 24-year old' which narrows it down to Chadwick, Buzsaky and Djordjic

FYI it was Marcel Seip. Sjc 06:42, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

Which season

It is still the 2003/04 season. The club is still considered Division Two by The Football League until sometime in June see User:SimonMayer/Test/Plymouth Argyle F.C. for advanced preparation with 2004/05 updates.
SimonMayer 14:12, 23 May 2004 (UTC)

An absolutely fantastic page, a true model for how all football club pages should be. When I know more about editing, I intend to reform the Southampton F.C. page along similiar lines. Saint will 13:07, 25 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Reverts

Changed back to 21:30, 18 Oct 2004 to correct vandalism and other changes. Tynan is correct. Bornintheguz 20:39, 27 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Current squad

Several of these are different to the official site. Anyone have a definitive list? Bornintheguz 13:57, 16 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Pilgrim Pete

The image of mascot Pilgrim Pete seems extremely grainy (probably due to high JPEG compression). Is there a chance anyone has a higher quality picture that could replace it? ---Benbread 18:12, 13 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Given the general cheesiness of Pilgrim Pete and his antics, you could get David Bailey in to do the pic and it still wouldn't be anything other than a low quality image :) Sjc

Michael Foot?

I've read in several places that Foot was registered as a player (no. 90) for his 90th birthday in 2003 - presumably just for the one season. If that's true, I think it would certainly be worth a mention, as it raises him out of the ranks of the "ordinary" famous fans section. Loganberry (Talk) 00:52, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

Appearance info

Does anyone know why this was removed by 86.31.142.73 recently? Most club pages have details about players with the most appearances for the club. Mphacon 16:29, 16 January 2007 (UTC)

Green Army

Player number 12 is Green Army. Can someone explain, please?Bill Tegner 22:48, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

Green Army is number 12 because it gives the impression of a "twelfth man". See "that" speech by Delia Smith at "that" Norwich game for an example. Mageslayer99 19:40, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

Failed "good article" nomination

This article failed good article nomination. This is how the article, as of November 1, 2007, compares against the six good article criteria:

1. Well written?: The prose in this piece seemed to be written hastily... please take a good look at it so it flows encyclopedicly... I've made a few suggestions and comments below. Only 3 references for such a long article is unacceptable.
2. Factually accurate?: Seems fine to me.
3. Broad in coverage?: yes
4. Neutral point of view?: A couple of issues about fans which were not referenced... until so, they are pretty much NPOV.
5. Article stability? yes
6. Images?: yes

{{{closing comments}}}

When these issues are addressed, the article can be renominated. If you feel that this review is in error, feel free to take it to a Good article reassessment. Thank you for your work so far.— Jazznutuva 15:29, 9 May 2007 (UTC) }}

Failed GA Recommendations

Additional Comments

  1. Needs a ton more references... and the 3 already inserted should be put in a better format. See WP:CITE.
  2. The introduction has some conjecture about the fans traveling which is not referenced in any way, thus being close to WP:NPOV.
  3. Prose is a bit hard to understand in parts, does not flow like an excyclopedia... for example "Plymouth Argyle Football Club (commonly known as the Pilgrims, the Greens, the Green Army or simply Argyle) are an English football team, playing in the Championship league."... the "Championship" league isn't correct... it should read "playing in the English Football League's Coca Cola Championship". There are other s not mentioned here that are rightish... but not factually sound.
  4. Written "In 1920 Argyle entered the Football League Third Division as a founder member."... what is a "founder member"?... Founding member.
  5. Club records section is in disarray... it all seems to run together. Possibly a list?
  6. Famous fans section is all conjecture... no reason for it in an encylopedia Jazznutuva 15:23, 9 May 2007 (UTC)

Club history

There is rather a large gap in the history section between 1927 and 1984, covering nearly half of the club's existence. Daemonic Kangaroo 12:12, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

Editing Holloway

I've edited the Manager sections as being 'vacant as of 21 November 2007' but the lines need tidying up. Sorry, dunno how. Plutonium27 (talk) 17:17, 22 November 2007 (UTC)

Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders

Much speculation and rumour surrounds the origin of the name Argyle. The most popular explanation is that they were named after the nearby Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, an army regiment with a strong football side of its own.

Could this be a hoax? It seems odd that the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders should be "nearby". Why were they stationed in Plymouth? BTLizard (talk) 10:31, 14 January 2008 (UTC)

List of Confirmed Players That are Set to Leave at the end of the 2007/2008 season

This, to me, seems like a silly section. For a start, why would you need to say that a player on loan is going to return to their parent club? That should be taken as read. I changed the structure so that the squad list had a footnote to reflect that some contracted players are due to leave (see here) but this was just undone. I think that it's a more encyclopaedic and concise way of conveying the same information. On top of that, I properly referenced it. Dancarney (talk) 09:49, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

Green home strip

Plymouth Argyle Football Club . . . is one of only two clubs in the Football League to play in a principally green home strip.

What is a "green home strip"? For those of us unfamiliar with English football, an explanation would be nice. 68.62.0.178 (talk) 05:32, 27 September 2008 (UTC)

What more can be said? Their home strip is predominantly green. See the picture in the infobox (although that might indicate such a dark shade of green it looks almost black) - fchd (talk) 06:35, 27 September 2008 (UTC)
OK, so "strip" = uniform? That's a term I wasn't familiar with. 68.62.0.178 (talk) 01:22, 30 September 2008 (UTC)

Kudos on whoever created the kit logos. However it seems a shame that the home one will be replaced very soon.

largest European city without top-flight club myth

The Guardian's The Knowledge nailed this myth - while Plymouth is currently the UK town/city to be the largest without a team ever to grace the top flight (though Milton Keynes will probably soon outgrow it before they get promoted to the premier league) it is NOT the largest European team to fit this category . Ufa in Russia, with a population of over 1 million, holds this record and even in Western Europe, Wiesbaden in Germany is also larger than eith Plymouth (or indeed Hull!!) and has never had a team in the highest level of the Bundesliga. I'd suggest changing "Europe" for "UK" or "Britain". Paul haynes (talk) 11:56, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

The "myth" is correct, although we have problems with finding a reliable source to prove it. I searched on the Guardian for it and found a report/blog in which a fan posted the thing you mentioned above, which is obviously not reliable. I also found this. Not sure if "Paul Roberts" is that reliable though and plus it's outdated stating that Plymouth is the second largest city in England (Hull hadn't been promoted at the time of this article). So yes, the myth is true, but we still can't find a source that clearly states that. Jolly Ω Janner 00:46, 15 June 2009 (UTC)
Wikipedia's own List of towns and cities in England by population uses the 2001 census figures from the Office for National Statistics. Scanning down the list shows Plymouth in 15th, followed by Dudley in 19th, then MK in 25th. The ONS census figures ought to be an official enough source for most people. Boston United

Notable former players

I personally think its excessive since people like Taribo West, Dan Gosling and Emile Mpenza contributed very little to the club, but I respect that others might disagree. However, can we atleast split it, like the current squad section, so it doesn't take up so much room? And tidy it up so that its in historical order, maybe with (xxxx-xxxx) next to their name to display when they played for the club because it looks silly as it is. I'm pretty sure Tony Capaldi didn't play for Argyle before legends like Sammy Black. Argyle 4 Life 15:06, 1 January 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Argyle 4 Life (talkcontribs)

Now tagged. Such a list might be of value where there is a clear criteria for inclusion/exclusion, such that the decision over whether to include or exclude a player is a matter of fact, but if it is a matter of an editor's whim or fancy, it is not encyclopaedic, but is OR and POV. Sorry...

Sorry but I've seemed to have messed something up around the bit about the Santos game. I tried to insert a reference, but somehow loads of sections (1980s cup run, 1990s, 2000s & promotions) got deleted. I didn't delete them, so have no idea where they've gone. Could someone undo it or something? That'd be really helpful! Yusefpa 07:22, 5 June 2010 (UTC)

I've fixed it. You missed off a ">" at the start of the reference. I would suggest the creation of a History of Plymouth Argyle F.C. page because the history section is getting very long now. I want to get the article to featured status one day and it won't happen without change. This is how the Ipswich Town article looks, which is featured, and this is their history page, which is also featured. Do you fancy creating that page and working on it? Released players

The team sheet is wrong, all the players have been released, only Ronald Zubar has been offered a contract. Also 3 apprentices. — Preceding unsigned comment added by R4h4al (talkcontribs) 09:34, 26 May 2011 (UTC)

That is not what the source says; Guadeloupe-born defender Zubar is the only player out of contract at Home Park to be offered new deal when the current contracts expire this summer. Their contracts expire at the end of June, and Ronald plays for Wolves. Argyle 4 Lifetalk 13:54, 26 May 2011 (UTC)

Squad table format

A discussion is being held here on the possibility of rolling out a new squad template. The new template, named {{football squad player2}}, differs from the standard squad layout in several ways:

  • It features a sort function
  • Comes in a single column format that can be understood by screen readers.
    • Single column format ensures that low resolution browsers, including mobile devices, do not get part or all of the second column cut off.
    • Single column format ensures less clutter, particularly at lower resolutions, for wide sections such as the Arsenal loan section.
  • It gives nationality its own column; at present flags are featured in a blank, untitled column
  • It complies with Wikipedia's guidance on flag usage.
  • It leaves enough space to add images of current players, an example of which can be seen at Watford F.C#Current squad.

To give your thoughts, please read and contribute to the discussion at WikiProject Football. Argyle 4 Lifetalk 17:56, 23 January 2012 (UTC)

ORIGIN OF NAME

Why is there no explanation as to how this English club bears a Scottish place name as part of its title? It is so bizarre that you would think the anomaly would be addressed in the club's biography. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.75.169.185 (talk) 18:58, 5 November 2017 (UTC)
