drilling mud edit
I see blueprints for all sorts equipment for PSVs about every week, but nobody at my company can tell me exactly what drilling mud is. What is this stuff? Aparently it must contain oil because it is illegal to dump overboard and has to be returned to shore for processing. Anyone have a better answer than "nasty goo, possibly containing oil"?--Dj245 01:34, 6 November 2007 (UTC)
I believe drilling mud is a fluid wich is injected into the oil wells to lubricate the drill bit. It may also be used for other purposes, but I don't really know.

he is correct. Drilling mud can vary greatly in composition depending on the need and intended usage. Uncertain about calling it oily but varied compositions, depending on the need. Used Drilling fluid is also carried back to shore - possible re-use, must work to remove the soluble dirt/rock as they are drilling I worked on PSV in the 1990 - I recally the dry bulk tanks could take barite or cement and had to be cleaned manually - entry between each use< i do not remember such for drilling mud, but I do recall ability to recirc it via a pump - ensure id did not settle separate during transit.I recall occasional tank entry and inspect manifolds & nozzle piping with tank to ensure full recirc.
Additional comment - The Ensco RAM pictured - was a below average Size PSV for the US Gulf of Mexico in the early 1990. PSV have gotten larger since then.
