Placido Domingo to be Israeli Opera's honorary musical advisor

Possibly of interest for the article:

"The Israel Opera has announced the appointment of US conductor David Stern to the position of IO music director for the upcoming and the 2009/'10 season. Additionally, singer/conductor Placido Domingo has consented to serve as the IO's honorary musical advisor." [1] Voceditenore (talk) 17:10, 28 September 2008 (UTC)

I read about it too but so far there is not much details about it including the duration etc - Jay (talk) 03:21, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

World record for longest ovation???

He holds a world record for the longest ovation on the operatic stage with 101 curtain calls and 80 minutes non-stop applause after performing Otello, Verdi's operatic version of Shakespeare's Othello, as the Moor of Venice in Vienna on 30 July 1991.[11] Quotation from the main page. ***This statement is defenitely wrong!!! The applause on that night was not merely for Domingo- Sherill Milnes as Jago earned about twenty minutes applause and another twentyfive minutes at least were for the leaving director of the Vienna State Opera on that night. So Domingo received 35 Minutes at the most and I do know. I've been present on that evening. I do not know why Wiki risks bad reputation. There have been quite a few articles on the subject correcting the false statement. And you know how much you really care you can see at this: even the date of the performance you talk about is wrong: it was the 30th of June 1991. Callas, Caruso and also Pavarotti so got longer applause and more curtains than Domingo. That does not make Domingo a poorer singer. He is one of the greatest of opera history. But because of this he does not really need to push untrue stories. See also artivcle by Mervin Block. So please stop that nonsense. Xavier Madrid —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.184.107.35 (talk) 19:37, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

Mr. Madrid, perhaps you should forward your dissatisfaction to "The Kennedy Center". Yes, the date was wrong and I have just fixed it. As for "the longest ovation .....", refer the reference at Biography of Placido Domingo in Kennedy-Center website. Thanks - Jay (talk) 08:56, 24 December 2008 (UTC)

...Bravo Wiki: the lie about the longest applause has been removed finally from the main page!!! Xavier Madrid —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.184.83.80 (talk) 09:10, 9 May 2009 (UTC)

Unbelievable: The Kennedy Center still spreads the lie on Domingos longest ovation!!! JDT —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.184.67.129 (talkcontribs) 05:57, 20 May 2009

Please sign your comments and please restrict them to improving and developing the article, not your personal opinions about Domingo. Article talk pages are neither a forum nor a soapbox. The ovation claim was removed from the article, by you incidentally, and has not been re-added, per the unreliability of the claim. You can now stop beating a dead horse. Any further comments by you (i.e. the related IPs in Bonn and Cologne) which do not directly pertain to improving the article and consist purely of your personal opinions about its subject will be removed per Wikipedia:Talk page guidelines. - Voceditenore (talk) 07:23, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

Otello photo

I'm not sure that's a photo of Domingo as Otello; it may be him in another role. He uses black makeup on his face when playing Otello, and the photo makes him look as if he isn't wearing any.AlbertSM (talk) 21:26, 25 March 2008 (UTC)

Albert, Mr. Domingo has played Otello for many times, for that, he also have used various make-up artists services. I have all 4 of his Otello's DVDs (all with different color toning). And the one I hate so very much is Otello (1986 film) directed by Franco Zeffirelli - because the make-up artist colored his face too dark until he looks so evil and different than him we usually know. The picture in his article was taken during Otello 1992 at Royal Opera House along with Kiri Te Kanawa and Sergei Leiferkus. And, it was given to me by his PR, it was taken for the opera promotion, not on stage. Cheers. - Jay (talk) 05:34, 26 March 2008 (UTC)
Correction - The photo is actually taken on 28-09-1975 in Hamburg State Opera. (To confirm this, hit this link, scroll down to 1975 and hit at "Otello" (Photo) link). The webmaster has just updated the date and the photo last month. Sorry for the wrong info because that is what been told to me via e-mail before. - Jay (talk) 13:29, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

Understated intro?

Surely Placido rates amongst the greatest voices of the 20th Century. He is described merely as being "hard working". Wallie (talk) 08:37, 19 January 2009 (UTC)

Wallie, I agree that Domingo is one of the best tenors (or baritons, whatever), but other kind of judgements and claims of prestige are un-encyclopedic and don't follow NPOV. We should aim for an objective article, based on facts corroborated by verifiable sources. Thank you for your comment.--Karljoos (talk) 12:30, 19 January 2009 (UTC)

...Reading all this I do ask myself do they want to listen to his voice or do they want to read his passport. Strange hobby. JDT —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.184.120.41 (talk) 15:04, 10 March 2009 (UTC)

It's my opinion that he has one of the worst voices of the 20th Century but I can't put that in the article either. This article already has too positive a tone for a tenor whose career was boosted by PR bullshit. 174.6.245.65 (talk) 13:00, 18 February 2011 (UTC)

Christmas in Vienna and Sarah Brightman

I really get really angry when I scrolled down and I see the Christmas in Vienna section; where the hell is Sarah Brightman?? she also performed with plácido in this event!! It is a shame!! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 201.219.57.226 (talkcontribs) 00:32, 1 May 2009

I'm not sure why someone keeps removing her name. For future reference, she did appear with him there. See: [2] Voceditenore (talk) 07:33, 1 May 2009 (UTC)

Domingo's age (again)

Domingos age is 75 not 68

Three separate registered editors, all members of The Opera Project have provided 4 verifiable references for Domingo's 1941 birth date from 4 high quality sources: Encyclopedia Britannica, Concise Grove Dictionary of Music (1994), The Encyclopedia of World Biography (2006), and Warrack, J. and West, E. The Oxford Dictionary of Opera (1992). Note that The 1979 edition of The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Opera, p. 137 erroneously listed his birth date as January 12, 1934 (they also got the day wrong). This was corrected to January 21, 1941 in the 1992 edition. If you can provide verifiable evidence to the contrary in references of the same quality (not a German newspaper article), which have been published after 2006, please bring it to the talk page. See also the archives of this page, where this has been discussed ad nauseam with various anonymous IPs from Germany (as is your IP). If you continue to add this erroneous information to the article, I will once again have the article protected. I will also revert such additions on sight per Wikipedia's policy on biographies of living persons. Also, this is the English Wikipedia, please make all comments in English and provide translations for any quotes.[3] Voceditenore (talk) 12:26, 9 May 2009 (UTC)

Split-off requests

Per Wikipedia:Splitting and Wikipedia:Stand-alone lists I really feel like these two sections could do with splitting off. In particular the awards section, as lists of awards and nominations are very common lists once they grow to this size (just got one featured, actually). They are large and obtrusive, and I really feel that a summary and link to a full article would make the whole thing more accessible. Staxringold talkcontribs 22:14, 30 August 2009 (UTC)

I agree. --Karljoos (talk) 23:54, 30 August 2009 (UTC)
I also agree. -- Voceditenore (talk) 05:59, 31 August 2009 (UTC)

Warning for disruptive behaviour

(This person edits from constantly shifting IPs beginning with 87.184...., all of which resolve to DEUTSCHE TELEKOM in Bonn). Since you edit anonymously (despite your addition of a variety of fake names to messages here), and have no permanent IP talk page, I am posting this warning here. If you continue to remove valid referenced information from Plácido Domingo, and continue to violate talk page guidelines (clearly displayed at the top of this page) by continually using it as a soap box for your negative views on this singer, your disruptive behaviour will be reported to Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents. Voceditenore (talk) 10:17, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

German law is different and stricter than that in the Anglosphere. If he can be located he can be fined. It's not a court process and there are solicitors specialising in this, making a mint, not from you though. Talk to the German wikipedia guys, they might be up to speed with what they call 'Abmahnung'. 144.136.192.4 (talk) 06:10, 10 January 2014 (UTC)

Infobox

This article lacks one. Can you please add it? Netrat (talk) 23:10, 9 September 2009 (UTC)

Infoboxes are not used on biographical articles on opera singers per lengthy discussion at WikiProject Opera. See [14]. Voceditenore (talk) 13:12, 10 September 2009 (UTC)

Article splits

The article is currently showing this for the Complete repertoire section (addded by User:Zink Dawg), while at the same time Repertoire of Plácido Domingo has already been created by the same user without any discussion whatsoever. Can Zink Dawg please explain? I'm not necessarly against the splits, but they should have been discussed first. Voceditenore (talk) 19:07, 13 October 2009 (UTC)

Taipei Performance

Unless I missed, Domingo's performance of 雨夜花 in Taipei is not mentioned...--达伟 (talk) 12:10, 9 April 2010 (UTC)

What does 雨夜花 refer to? A concert in the Four Seasons Hotel in Taipei? Vivaldi's The Four Seasons. If it's just a concert, it's one of literally hundreds that Domingo has given in his career. Unless it is a particularly notable one and/or has been commercially recorded, it wouldn't be mentioned. Voceditenore (talk) 13:01, 9 April 2010 (UTC)
It's one of the most popular folk-style songs from Taiwan (basic translation Flower on a Rainy Evening, translit. "Yu Ye Hua") written in 1934. The performance was at the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall on November 28, 2002. The performance is probably more notable vis-a-vis the history of Taiwanese music and the song "Yu Ye Hua", than it is vis-a-vis Domingo (see zh:雨夜花). It was a duet with Jody Chiang (江蕙 also translit. Jiang Hui). --67.159.85.194 (talk) 15:50, 9 April 2010 (UTC)
I am sure it was a great performance but it's not a notable event in Domingo's career.--Karljoos (talk) 22:24, 9 April 2010 (UTC)

LA Opera

Why is there no mention of his directorship of the LA Opera? I believe he has moved to the LA area and I also believe that he has taken US citizenship but I don't care enough about it to find sources. JimCubb (talk) 19:40, 1 August 2010 (UTC)

"On September 20, 2010, Domingo announced that he would renew his contract as General Director of the Los Angeles Opera through 2013". I couldn't find any source about what PD becoming a Naturalized US citizen [15]. Most sources ID him as a Spanish citizen (see the dicussion archive).--Karljoos (talk) 18:39, 15 August 2011 (UTC)

WikiProject Latin America?

I know this is not an important issue, but I do not understand why was this article included in the WikiProject Latin America. Of course he did live in Mexico for 16 years, married a mexican and has sung some non-classical mexican music but he is neither relevant as a Latin American figure nor as a singer of latin American repertoire and lets not forget that he was born in Europe of Spanish parents, has lived most of his life in the States and he is not legally a citizen of an Latin American country.--Karljoos (talk) 18:29, 15 August 2011 (UTC)

Well, he did win Grammys for Best Latin Pop Performance for Always in my Heart (Siempre en mi corazon) and Best Mexican-American Performance for 100 years of Mariachi. Most full-time Latin singers couldn't hope to replicate that. Several of his recordings have contained Latin American music (and not just from Mexico). He was Person of the Year at the Latin Grammys a few years ago too. He also owns a house in Mexico and still spends a lot of time there, beyond the fact that he grew up there and had Mexican citizenship for most of his younger years (his parents became naturalized Mexican citizens too). His oldest two kids are Mexican born (although Placi Jr. has recently exchanged his Mexican citizenship for American citizenship). Of course, Domingo's a Spaniard, but his ties to Mexico and Latin America are very strong. He's said so himself. You don't have to be from a place to be relevant to it. I think he should be included in that project.Rmm413 (talk) 01:06, 11 June 2014 (UTC)
It was originally tagged under WikiProject Latin America because the bot tagged everything under the category "Latin music". As you mentioned, he has recorded several Latin music albums which is why he is covered by WikiProject Latin music. That said, he'd be probably tagged under Mexico rather than just Latin America. make separate section on health?

Hi, The last paragraph of the section on Domingo's family contains some health issues that he has suffered from. (I added the material on his embolism and subsequent recovery.) I am wondering if we should create a new section on his health; it doesn't seem appropriate to keep it where it is, since it is not about his family. Any thoughts? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Declaration1776 (talkcontribs) 23:51, 14 July 2013 (UTC)

NO, we don't need to delve that deeply into an artist's life!! If, at some point, health reasons cause him to withdraw from whichever commitments he has made, a mention that is if this is the reason would appropriate. Separate section - NO. Viva-Verdi (talk) 00:36, 15 July 2013 (UTC)
The simplest thing is to rename the section "Family and personal life". Under such a heading, a brief mention would be appropriate. A separate section is completely unwarranted and gives undue weight to health issues, which just about everyone has once they reach 70. Voceditenore (talk) 04:38, 15 July 2013 (UTC)
Thank you for the feedback; I agree completely. I renamed the section as Voceditenore suggested. Declaration1776 (talk) 15 July 2013 —Preceding undated comment added 14:35, 15 July 2013 (UTC)

KBE in lede. Why?

This person has received numerous awards from across the world. Why does the award from only one such state, the United Kingdom, get mentioned in the opening sentence? Surely this is not done for nationalist reasons, namely this is the English language Wikipedia and an editor wants to make a special British claim on this very famous, but non-British, person? 195.103.66.30 (talk) 23:25, 17 July 2014 (UTC)

I don't think it was done for any ulterior motive. I find that many non-British people, especially ones from countries which have no knighthoods or aristocratic titles, tend to give them rather exaggerated importance. Having said that, I agree that post-nominals are in general over-used on Wikipedia. Their use in this case does go against the guidance in this section of the Wikipedia Manual of Style: "Post-nominal letters, other than those denoting academic degrees, should be included when they are issued by a country or widely recognizable organization with which the subject has been closely associated. Honors issued by other entities may be mentioned in the article, but should generally be omitted from the lead". Domingo is not particularly associated with the UK.
