I've been to PIlot mt. and it IS awesome!! Next time I go back I will be sure to bring my digital camera and take some pictures (tasteful, notable pictures, mind you). If I am not mistaken something notable is Pilot mt. is located where the coastal plain stops and the mountain ranges begin, or something like that. LAso, my dad has told me that years ago there used to be wooden steps that went up the side of pilot mt! Jaberwocky6669 July 2, 2005 04:45 (UTC)

Have you been to Hanging Rock? Also, have you taken that portion of I-77 that clings to the side of the cliff near Fancy Gap, VA, and from which you can get a great panoramic vista of Pilot Mountain, Hanging Rock and the valley? If you're not the one driving, that is... you have to keep your eye on the road in that area. Wahkeenah 2 July 2005 07:37 (UTC)

I've been to hanging rock but I don't get out to VA often. Hanging rock is great too and it's a stub article which I hope to correct. Jaberwocky6669 July 2, 2005 07:46 (UTC)

Sure enough, you used to be able to climb onto the rock itself. I made the climb a couple of times with my grandfather in the 1960's. The whole mountain used to be privately owned & operated as a commercial tourist attraction. A large, wooden scaffolding, enclosing a long series of steep steps, let brave (and hardy!) vistors access a part of the rock's top. Looking back on it, it was quite dangerous and poorly supervised. Once on the top, you had free access to any number of steep, sheer (not to mention high) drops. I'm sure that aspect had every bit as much to do with banning access as did the preservation angle.

I've never gotten to hike on Pilot Mountain. The thing is the trails have been realivily cleared off now so its an easy trail, which I don't like one bit. My prefrence is for Grandfather Mountain.

Formatting changes edit

Great pictures. When I added the mountain infobox, is altered the layout of the pictures leading to overlaps and other problems. I hope the original author and photographers does not mind, but I solved this problem by putting the images into a gallery at the bottom of the page.Badgettrg 08:35, 12 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Saddle? edit

Really? A Saddle? It looks like a boob. That's what I had a horrible urge to edit this article to say, but I refrained because I couldn't figure out a good way to write it. Anyone else want to give it a shot? Matthardingu (talk) 13:36, 7 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Forest Fire edit

I've updated this page about the on-going story with the wildfire growing out of control on the mountain. (It's an awesomely terrifying sight if you live near the mountain!)
I did the best I could but if anyone with better editing skills wants to add additional information or polish what I already wrote then feel free to. Constchar (talk) 18:50, 10 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
