Cassell edition edit

Well, this is a mess.

First, no, it wasn't the original. Second, partially because they have no dates or volume labels whatsoever and partially because Wikipedia dropped the ball, there's a lot of misinformation on the net. Some list the Cassell as the original edition (that was Appleton), some state it had three volumes (that was Appleton), some state that it was published in 1875 (that was Appleton). It came out as a series of five books from 1876 to 1879. Vol. I was 1876, Vol. II was 1877, Vol. V was presumably 1879... and I can't find when Vol. III and IV were published, whether in '77, '78, or '79.

The Vol. II given here is stated by Archive.org to be Vol. 1-2 or (in a different place) 1, which would give it a date of 1876, but it's actually the second volume. The first two were labelled "British Isles" but without any numbering.

The Vol. I given here is stated by Google to be part of the 1881 reprint... it might have been but it looks identical to the '76 volume... On the other hand, the Vols. III, IV, and V are given as "Cassell & Co." which means they should be from after 1888... but Vol III's ads are for items from late 1884... Vol IV's are for early 1885 and V's for early 1886... There's no reason reprints would need a lag like that, but none of it makes much sense. — LlywelynII 08:06, 26 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
