In the media edit
This specific redirect was created after being featured as part of a lyric in the song "Every Major's Terrible" in the popular webcomic xkcd on May 7, 2012. In the comic, "Physics major" is said to redirect to "engineer". - Dravecky (talk) 20:24, 9 May 2012 (UTC)

Discussion, target edit
For some reason in was deemed inappropriate to have a banner on this page alerting people to the fact that there the main discussion on this redirect is going on elsewhere, so I'll just tell you manually, there there is a discussion at Wikipedia:Redirects_for_discussion/Log/2012_May_7#Physics_major. In that discussion I've proposed changing the target to Physics_education#Physics_education_in_American_universities. If you have opinions about that, visiting that discussion would be helpful. - Before the XKCD comic, there was an article here about the "Physics Major" available at many colleges and universities. I believe this information was intact after the first "engineer" redirect was added, and the redirect was the only change for about a week. However, the content of the article has clearly been removed, and there have been so many changes, Wikipedia's history of this page has been lost. Now that the edits have settled down, that content should be put back in, if possible. I'm pretty sure the original content was specific to the major, not just physics education in general. The redirect to physics education should remain in tact until we have a better article for "physics major". I'm going to the Internet Archives to see if I can find the originals. - Checking the history (and to my recollection), this page was created May 7th as a redirect. It never housed any content, unless that content was deleted some time before the xkcd article, and that doesn't appear to be the case since the first AfD nom in the logs is May 12th. — Jess· Δ♥ 17:39, 14 September 2012 (UTC)
