Currently the article says, unsourced, "Most Phyllodes tumors are benign neoplasms, thus the term sarcoma is best avoided." I don't believe this is quite accurate. Yes, the benign ones are obviously not "sarcomas." But the borderline and malignant ones definitely ARE sarcomas, as indicated by their name (cystosarcoma phylloides) and references like the first one on Google. If you read PT message boards (which I realize is original research!) you'll find that many of the doctors of those with PTs are sarcoma specialists.--Injoy 21:41, 20 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Also, these also appear in men, see details.--Injoy 21:45, 20 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

I agree with you that it should be changed. From what I have read the tumors have malignant potential. AriaNo11 (talk) 19:49, 18 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

epidemiology

edit

The article states that this is a disease most frequently observed in the 40s and 50s. I have just read somewhere else it is more commonly seen in the late 20s. I think the epidemiological data should be referenced or verified.

UCF COM WikiProject Course-- January/February 2023

edit

Hello everyone! I am so excited to collaborate on the phyllodes tumor wiki article as part of my WikiProject Course. Below I will be posting my work plan!

Work Plan

Edit article to follow the recommended structure and order for “Diseases or disorders or syndromes”, per the Wikipedia: Manual of Style/Medicine-related articles

Structure of article as follows:
o Lead Section
o Classification (Added to "Diagnosis" section)
o Signs and Symptoms
o Causes
o Mechanism
o Diagnosis
o Prevention or Screening
o Treatment (or Management)
o Outcomes (or Prognosis)
o Epidemiology

Lead Section
o Edit for conciseness and grammar
o Add references as there are currently none in this section
o Evaluate for a neutral point of view
o Look for statistics on phyllodes tumor such as the incidence per year in the United States
o Make sure major points of the article are included in the lead section

Classification
o This section is currently placed as a subheading of Diagnosis
o Edit for conciseness and grammar
o Add references to sentences (3) that currently do not have one
o Evaluate for a neutral point of view
o Make sure major points of the article are included in the lead section
o Expand on the difference classifications of phyllodes tumors

Signs and Symptoms (or Presentation)
o Add references as there are currently none in this section.
o Edit for conciseness and grammar
o Assess and edit for use of medical jargon
o Research current literature for any potential new subsection additions
o Will change heading title to “Sign and Symptoms” instead of “Presentation”
o Elaborate on the symptoms patients experience with a phyllodes tumor

Causes
o Currently a missing section in the article
o Research this topic
o Add this section to article

Mechanism
o Currently a missing section in the article
o Research the pathogenesis / pathophysiology of phyllodes tumor
o Add this section to article

Diagnosis
o Section currently discusses classification
o Add information on how phyllodes tumors are diagnosed (i.e. biopsy, imaging)
o Add what medical professionals are trained in the ability to perform these procedures
o Add these subheadings to this section of the article (i.e. Physical Exam, Biopsy, Imaging)

Prevention or Screening
o Currently a missing section in the article
o Research this topic
o Add this section to article if substantial literature is found

Treatment (or Management)
o Add references to sentences missing citations in this section
o Edit for conciseness and grammar
o Research current literature for any potential new subsection additions

Outcomes or Prognosis
o Add this section
o Put the current “Spectrum” section into this section of the article

Epidemiology
o Research this topic (incidence, prevalence, age distribution, and sex ratio)
o Add this section to article if substantial literature is found

Spectrum
o Remove this section (does not follow Wikipedia guidelines for this type of article)
o Add information to the “Outcomes or Prognosis” section

General Goals:
o Go through each reference and assess if it is open access and whether it meets Wiki criteria
o If not open access, look for alternative open access resources if possible
o Add images (radiology, pathology) where applicable

Hey, great job on editing and adding substantial sections to this article! I copied the template for reviewing and checklist in bold with my responses:
Make sure it's understandable to the intended WP audience.
--I think readability is good here and the only suggestions I would make is under Signs and Symptoms to define the word "necrosis" in simpler terms or link to the wiki article on it.
--There is also a sentence in this section that starts, "There growth can be slow..." (I would change "There" to "Their")
--Under 'Mechanism' the sentence that starts, "In the Wnt pathway, gene transcription B-catenin is a highly-regulated process..." there seems to be a grammar issue.
--For this paragraph, there seems to be a period in between the sentences when there should be a comma or simply a different word to start the second sentence: "Genes that have been associated with an higher incidence of phyllodes tumors include Mediator Complex Subunit 12 (MED12) exon 2, Telomerase Reverse Transcriptase (TERT) promoter, and Retinoic Acid Receptor Alpha (RARA).[10] Genes which play an important role in regulating DNA synthesis.[10]"
Minor changes and good job overall.
Make sure we include appropriate sources, mostly NOT primary literature.  But OK to use primary literature when there is no secondary literature. Also OK to use closed-access resources.
I like that the most up to date source you used were in the appropriate sections such as Diagnosis and Prognosis. I was curious to know if there are more up to date sources that can be found for the first 2 statements in Prevention and Screening since references 20 and 21 are from the early 2000s.
Look at the workplan and compare/contrast to actual work done.
Great job sticking to your work plan and adding most of the sections that make up the article now. The pictures you added were relevant and help illustrate your points to the reader.
Spot check a few links to ensure links are not broken
Links are working.
Ensure structure of article flows understandably.
Sections follows manual of style for the most part. 'Classification' is under 'Diagnosis' but this seems appropiate given the nature of the topic.
Follow readability guidelines (no sentences longer than 26 words). Lots of periods, few commas or semicolons.
Overall, good job here especially given how dense the language around this topic can be.
Checklist:
Is everything in the article relevant to the article topic?
Yes.
Is there anything that distracted you?
From the perspective of a non-science background reader, the medical terms could be a distraction but the relevant terms have links to other articles for explanation.
Is the article neutral? Yes.
Are there any claims, or frames, that appear heavily biased toward a particular position? No.
Are there viewpoints that are overrepresented, or underrepresented? No.
Check the citations. Do the links work? Does the source support the claims in the article? Yes.
Is each fact supported by an appropriate, reliable reference? Yes.
Where does the information come from? Mostly secondary sources and where there are case reports and primary research, these tend to be sentences contributed by another user.
Are these neutral sources? Yes.
If biased, is that bias noted? Not applicable.
Is any information out of date? Seemingly no.
Is anything missing that should be added? No, based on the workplan.
Great job again! Dsk23 (talk) 05:24, 1 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for the great feedback!! I appreciate your comments and added those suggested changes. Tch5167 (talk) 14:19, 1 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
