Compare with fr:Philippe de La Hire

Should this title be moved to Philippe de La Hire? Regards Gangleri | Th | T 19:34, 11 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

I believe "La Hire" would be preferable to "la Hire", because it emphasizes that both words compose his 'surname', so I have no objection. Nevertheless, I saw his given name spelled "Phillipe", so I added that as another spelling some time ago. — Joe Kress 17:28, August 12, 2005 (UTC)

The death date appears to be off one year, 1718 as given in the Catholic Encyclopedia, and Larousse. nwolcott2@post.harvard.edu

Good catch. All sources that I've checked so far have 1718. I'm changing the article. — Joe Kress 17:53, 13 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Intellectual Dishonesty/theft perpetrated by La Hire against Ole Romer

edit

There should be a section mentioning his multiple acts of intellectual thievery particularly regarding the work of Ole Romer and epicycloid gears. If you are looking for a reference try p344 of Roemer and the first determination of the velocity of light by I B Cohen. Leibniz wrote to Bernoulli about the true origin of the work on most efficient gear shape. Thepossumdance (talk) 00:46, 19 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Better portrait

edit

At the moment de la Hire's portrait in this article is a rather poor low-resolution drawing of unknown origin, probably obtained from the MacTutor History of Mathematics website.

A much better image can be found here.

I propose that we replace the current one with this one. AstroLynx (talk) 13:57, 23 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
